Alexander Isak did not fall over when Jurrien Timber pulled his shirt. For Andoni Iraola, that was the reason Liverpool did not get a penalty on Sunday. For Virgil van Dijk, it was precisely the reason 50 cameras should have been enough.

Timber had held the Liverpool striker’s shirt as Isak reached for a cross in the first half of a game Arsenal would eventually win 1-0 at Anfield. Referee Andy Madley let play run, and VAR Stuart Attwell did not call him to the pitchside monitor.

Van Dijk’s complaint, delivered after the final whistle, was aimed less at Madley than at the technology sitting behind him.

“We have 50 cameras. Why does he have to complain when there are so many cameras?” Van Dijk told reporters, per beIN Sports.

The Liverpool captain said he had seen the incident back, and had seen the same offence given on other weekends.

Iraola blames Isak’s refusal to fall

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola agreed with his captain. The problem, he suggested, was less what Timber did than what Isak did not.

“The Alex one is a clear penalty. You hold the shirt, we can all see that he holds the shirt,” Iraola told beIN Sports.

He added that because Isak did not go down, the penalty was never going to be given.

17 attempts, none on target

By then Liverpool had been chasing the game for most of the afternoon. Kai Havertz tapped in from close range in the 16th minute, after Declan Rice overlapped down the right and found him free at the back post, the official match report notes.

Van Dijk’s side registered 17 attempts without putting one on target. Florian Wirtz struck the crossbar from a free-kick, and Alexis Mac Allister headed over inside the box.

The win sent Arsenal three points clear of Manchester City with their eighth league win of the campaign. Not since 2012, when current Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was in their midfield, had the Gunners won a league match at Anfield.

Liverpool stayed fifth, nine points behind the leaders, with their five-match winning run ended by what their captain and head coach both believed should have been a penalty.
