Why a single first-place vote could swing the 2026 Ballon d’Or

Monday night in London could produce the closest Ballon d’Or finish in years. If two players end up level on total points, the trophy is not shared and no panel re-votes. It goes to whoever picked up more first-place votes.

That cascade matters because the 2026 men’s field is unusually bunched. Bayern Munich’s Kane is the 4/7 favourite, Real Madrid’s Mbappé has shortened dramatically to 2/1, and Barcelona’s Yamal sits at 5/1.

100 journalists, 10 names, 15 points at the top

The jury is a panel of 100 specialist journalists, with one representative from each of the top 100 FIFA-ranked nations. Each picks a top 10 from a 30-man shortlist drawn up by France Football, L’Équipe staff and previous-year jurors.

Sportsmole sets out the point breakdown: a first-place pick is worth 15 points, then 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 down the ballot. Voters are asked to weigh three criteria in order of importance, individual performance and decisive moments, team titles, then class and fair play. The qualifying window ran from 3 August 2025 to 19 July 2026.

When the totals are level

The tiebreaker is sequential. Whoever has more first-place votes wins first. If still tied, second-place votes are counted. Then third, and so on down the ballot until one candidate is ahead. In the rare event the ballots cannot separate the two, Sky Sports notes that France Football’s editor-in-chief has the final call.

The practical effect is that a handful of ballots at the very top carry disproportionate weight. A player ranked first on 20 ballots and left off most others can beat a candidate who finishes third or fourth on nearly every ballot but tops almost none.

Kane the favourite, Mbappé charging, Yamal waiting

Kane has the headline numbers: 73 goals for club and country across 2025-26, a Bundesliga title with Bayern and a run to the World Cup semi-finals with England. He is positioned to become the first English winner of the men’s Ballon d’Or in 25 years.

Mbappé has scored 58 goals in all competitions, including 10 at the World Cup, and his price collapsed from 16/1 to 2/1 inside a week after Real Madrid confirmed they would end their boycott of the ceremony. The club has not attended since Rodri was named 2024 winner over Vinícius Júnior. Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, Vinícius and Marc Cucurella are among four Real Madrid players on this year’s shortlist.

Yamal, who began the year as outright favourite, remains a live contender after Spain’s World Cup triumph and a run of 28 goal involvements for Barcelona.

The 70th Ballon d’Or begins at 8pm local time at the London Palladium, the first edition staged outside Paris. Kate Scott and Thierry Henry present.
