Why Ruben Amorim has chosen silence since leaving Manchester United
Ruben Amorim has yet to speak publicly about his dismissal from Manchester United, weeks after his exit from Old Trafford. According to reporting in England, that silence has been a deliberate decision rather than reluctance or uncertainty.
The Daily Mail reports, citing “well-placed sources in Portugal,” that Amorim plans to wait until the end of the season before addressing his departure. The report says the aim is to avoid drawing attention away from the team as United continue their push for Champions League qualification.
A tense final week at Old Trafford
Amorim was sacked on January 5, a day after United were held to a 1–1 draw away at Leeds United. His final post-match press conference attracted scrutiny, particularly comments that hinted at frustration with the club’s internal structure.
He referenced senior figures, including director of football Jason Wilcox, and said he had joined United to be “a manager, not a coach.” The remarks quickly fueled speculation about tensions behind the scenes.

United moved swiftly after the decision. Darren Fletcher was placed in temporary charge before Michael Carrick was appointed interim manager for the remainder of the season.
No single script for departing United managers
Manchester United managers have responded to dismissals in different ways over the years. Louis van Gaal issued a formal statement following his exit in 2016. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer later spoke through the club’s own media channels after leaving in 2021.
Others have taken a quieter approach. Jose Mourinho waited several weeks before commenting on his sacking, eventually addressing it while working as a television pundit. Amorim’s decision to remain silent fits within that broader pattern.
Focus shifts to Carrick’s early momentum
According to the Daily Mail, Amorim’s priority has been to avoid becoming part of the story while United’s season is still active. Carrick’s early results have reinforced that approach.

United have won three consecutive matches since his appointment, including a 2–0 home victory over Manchester City and a dramatic 3–2 away win against Arsenal. They followed that with a 3–2 win against Fulham at Old Trafford, despite surrendering a two-goal lead late on. Benjamin Sesko scored a stoppage-time winner to secure the points.
A farewell from within Amorim’s staff
While Amorim himself has stayed quiet, a message did emerge from his former coaching team. Assistant manager Carlos Fernandes posted a farewell message on Instagram last month, thanking players, staff, and supporters.
“In the end, working at a football club of this dimension doesn't just test your knowledge it reveals character,” Fernandes wrote, describing his time at United as “a special chapter” in his life.
For now, Amorim’s perspective remains absent from the public record. If the reporting is accurate, that silence is likely to continue until United’s season reaches its conclusion.
