Few expected Wojciech Szczesny to become a key figure in Barcelona’s push for titles this season, but the Polish veteran has proven to be a reliable presence between the posts. After coming out of retirement in October to replace the injured Marc-André ter Stegen, he has not only gained the trust of Hansi Flick but also won over the club’s supporters with his calm demeanor, humor, and solid performances.
Despite a shaky start to 2025, Szczesny has now established himself as the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Iñaki Peña. With Ter Stegen sidelined until at least April, reports suggest that Barcelona are considering keeping Szczesny beyond this season, which could set up an intriguing battle for the number one spot next year.
“I don’t think I’m 100% fit yet. My best form is still yet to come.”

He also acknowledged that a decision about his future is coming soon.
“It will probably be time soon to make a decision about my future. The most important thing now is to focus all my physical and mental energy on the upcoming matches. We have to play our best.”
Initially, it was believed that he would only remain at the club until the end of the season, but Szczesny has frequently expressed how happy he is at Barcelona. His performances have given Flick a difficult choice to make once Ter Stegen returns to full fitness.
“Playing for Barça Is Exciting”
Szczesny reflected on his experience at Barcelona, comparing it to his time at Juventus.

“I can’t complain about fate. I have to be very grateful for how it’s treated me. Playing for Barça is very exciting because it’s a very beautiful game, something completely different from what I’ve experienced up until now.”
He also highlighted the difference in football culture between the two clubs.
“I don’t like to make comparisons in life, but I can say that at Juventus, everything revolves around the result. The result is the most important thing. Here at Barça, there’s enormous joy in the type of football being played, and that’s contagious. It’s very surprising to see how many millions of people are watching what’s happening.”
Crucial Weeks Ahead for Szczesny and Barcelona
Szczesny’s comments came after Barcelona’s dramatic 4-2 comeback victory over Atlético Madrid, where they scored twice in stoppage time to claim a crucial win.

“We got this win and we’re happy, but it’s true that I feel a little sorry for the opponent. In this sport, you have to be bold. Football is brutal, and it was clear that Atlético lacked strength at the end.”
Barcelona will now face Atlético Madrid again on April 2 in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal at the Metropolitano. With the tie level at 4-4 from the first match, Szczesny has the chance to maintain his unbeaten record with Barcelona—potentially guiding the team to a cup final while his future remains undecided.
