Positive sample returned before competition
Thailand’s Pitchamon Opatniputh has been provisionally suspended from the 2026 Asian Games after an out-of-competition sample returned an adverse analytical finding for furosemide.
The sample was collected on September 17, two days before the Games officially began in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan. The International Testing Agency, which is independently managing the event’s anti-doping programme, subsequently notified the 19-year-old of the finding.
The case was initially reported in Denmark by TV 2 Sport. Opatniputh is ranked 18th in the women’s singles world rankings and had been expected to represent Thailand against China in the team competition.
Her suspension prevents her from competing, training, coaching or participating in other official activities during the Asian Games.

Case has not reached a final decision
The provisional suspension does not constitute a final finding that Opatniputh intentionally committed an anti-doping violation. The athlete can request that her B-sample be analysed and may challenge the provisional suspension before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
“The athlete also has the right to request the analysis of the B-sample,” the ITA said, as quoted by The Star.
No explanation for the finding had been made public when the suspension was announced. It would therefore be incorrect to speculate about how the substance entered her system or whether it was used deliberately.
Furosemide is a diuretic included in the World Anti-Doping Agency’s 2026 prohibited list under the category of diuretics and masking agents. It can increase urine production and lead to rapid fluid loss, but the positive test alone does not establish why the substance was present.

Rising career interrupted at major event
Opatniputh is considered one of Thailand’s leading young badminton players. She won the girls’ singles title at the 2023 World Junior Championships in Spokane, defeating Indonesia’s Chiara Marvella Handoyo 21-11, 21-9 in the final.
Her rise has since taken her into the senior world’s top 20. That made her expected participation in the Asian Games particularly significant for Thailand before the provisional suspension removed her from the competition.
The ITA plans to collect approximately 2,350 samples during the Games, which run from September 19 to October 4. Opatniputh’s case is the first publicly known positive test connected to the 2026 event, but the disciplinary process remains open and no final period of ineligibility has been imposed.
