Zhang Shuxian’s name is no longer in the BWF women’s doubles rankings. Tuesday’s weekly update carried no asterisk, no injury note and no retirement statement. The slot she had held with partner Jia Yifan at No. 4 in the world is simply empty.

The BWF operates a 52-week rolling points system, where every result drops off a year after it was earned. Zhang and Jia have not played since the Asian Games in late September and withdrew in sequence from the Denmark Open and the French Open, which was enough to zero their total once the older points fell away.

Neither Zhang nor the Chinese Badminton Federation has commented. The BWF has not either.

Shi Yuqi filed. Zhang did not.

Shi Yuqi, the former men’s singles world No. 1, shut down his season with shoulder and back injuries and formally applied for a protected ranking, preserving his points and his main-draw entry while he rehabilitates for 2027.

That is the standard route for a Chinese player who intends to return. It freezes the points, holds the entry rights, and buys months of recovery time. Zhang filed nothing.

Sina Sports put the inference plainly in its breakdown of the removal.

“A world top-five pair just vanishes, their points go straight to zero, and they haven’t even applied for ranking protection, and that action itself speaks louder than any statement.”

An unconfirmed teaching job

Online public notices in China have circulated suggesting Zhang has accepted a sports teaching position at Southwest Minzu University, Sina Sports reports. The screenshot is doing the rounds, but no one in the chain has confirmed it, not the player, not the university, not the federation.

Without a protected ranking, a return would mean starting again at the lower qualifying events and rebuilding her points from scratch, which Sina Sports describes as a steep physical and competitive barrier for a doubles player who turns 27 in January.

The partnership with Jia Yifan reached No. 4 in the world and lifted a second title of the 2026 season at the Australian Open with a 24-22, 21-13 win, according to Sina Sports’ career recap. Zhang’s team haul with China includes Sudirman Cup and Uber Cup gold alongside her titles on the BWF World Tour in women’s doubles.

Jia Yifan has also not entered any BWF event since the Asian Games, and the Chinese federation has not clarified her status.
