A new role for Chelsea’s main creator
Xabi Alonso is preparing to take charge of Chelsea with a clear priority: restoring a side that fell short of expectations and finding a way to get more from its most gifted players. Cole Palmer is likely to be central to that plan.
After a difficult season disrupted by muscular problems, including a groin issue, the 24-year-old needs both fitness and clarity. Alonso’s arrival could provide the structure and freedom required to bring him back to his best.
According to Football London, Alonso is expected to lean on the 3-4-2-1 system that brought him success at Bayer Leverkusen, with Palmer potentially used as a right-sided No. 10. It is a role that invites comparison with Florian Wirtz, who flourished on the opposite side of Alonso’s attack in Germany.
The Wirtz example
Wirtz became one of the most important players in Alonso’s Leverkusen side. Across 119 appearances under the Spanish coach, he produced 38 goals and 43 assists, numbers that underline both his influence and the environment Alonso created for him.

The comparison with Palmer is not exact, but it is easy to see why Chelsea may be encouraged by it. Both players are creative, instinctive and capable of deciding matches with one pass or one touch. Both also need freedom between the lines rather than being tied to a fixed position.
Palmer’s previous season, marked by injury and inconsistency, has left him in need of a fresh start. His omission from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup only sharpened the sense that he requires a strong response at club level.
Trust as the foundation
Alonso’s work with Wirtz was not only tactical. It was also built on trust.
Quoted by Bulinews, Wirtz said in 2023: “I feel extremely valued under him. I feel the trust. That is really important, especially as a young player. He gives me a lot of freedom on the pitch and always has a tip on what I can do better.”

That kind of management may be exactly what Palmer needs. Chelsea have often looked like a team of talented individuals searching for a clearer identity. Alonso’s task will be to turn that talent into a functioning system without removing the individual spark that makes players such as Palmer so valuable.
A defining test for Alonso
There will be pressure on Alonso from the moment he arrives at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea need to return to European competition, and the club’s supporters will expect progress quickly after another frustrating campaign.
For Palmer, the appointment could be a turning point. If Alonso can create the same balance of discipline and freedom that helped Wirtz thrive at Leverkusen, Chelsea may rediscover one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attacking players.
The idea is simple enough. Build the team around Palmer’s strengths, give him the spaces where he can hurt opponents, and trust him to make the difference. For Alonso and Chelsea, that may be one of the quickest routes back towards relevance.
