“You’re running out of time”: Rosenior sends message to Chelsea players

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has warned his squad that repeated disciplinary problems could derail the club’s push for Champions League qualification during the final weeks of the Premier League season.

The warning followed Sunday’s 2–1 defeat to Arsenal, where Pedro Neto was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession. The dismissal was Chelsea’s ninth red card of the campaign and renewed concerns about the team’s discipline.

According to The Guardian, Rosenior addressed the issue with his players during training this week, telling them that avoidable mistakes are becoming too costly as the season approaches its decisive stage.

“We spoke today as a group about how we can improve and what needs to happen,” Rosenior said.

Chelsea have also accumulated 12 yellow cards for dissent this season. Midfielder and vice-captain Enzo Fernández added to that tally in the Arsenal match after reacting angrily to a refereeing decision and throwing the ball to the ground.

Defensive lapses and dropped points

Despite controlling large portions of the second half at the Emirates Stadium, Chelsea conceded twice from set pieces. The defeat underlined another issue that has troubled the team in recent weeks defending corner kicks.

The loss left Chelsea outside the Premier League’s top five ahead of their trip to Aston Villa. With ten league matches remaining, Rosenior acknowledged that the margin for error is shrinking.

Chelsea have also dropped 19 points from winning positions this season, a statistic that reflects the team’s struggles to close out matches.

The club’s disciplinary record has drawn increased scrutiny amid heavy spending on the squad. Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took ownership, Chelsea have invested more than £1 billion in transfers, assembling one of the youngest squads in the league.

Some critics argue that the lack of experience has occasionally shown in high-pressure moments.

Discipline problems are not new for the club. During the 2023–24 season under Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea set a Premier League record for bookings, and similar concerns have persisted since then.

Training message as season enters final stretch

Rosenior used training this week to reinforce the importance of concentration and composure.

He pointed to a small seasonal detail to underline his message. The yellow balls typically used during winter training sessions have now been replaced with white ones a routine change that the coach said signals the decisive phase of the season.

“When those white balls come out, we can’t make those mistakes that we’re making,” Rosenior said. “You’re running out of time.”

Opportunities still ahead

Chelsea still have opportunities to shape their season across multiple competitions. The club faces Wrexham in the FA Cup fifth round and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16.

Team selection may also change in the coming weeks. Injuries to Jamie Gittens and Estêvão Willian, along with Neto’s suspension, could open the door for winger Alejandro Garnacho to feature more prominently.

The 21-year-old has played limited minutes since being substituted at half-time against West Ham in January, starting only once since then.

Rosenior said assessing how players respond to difficult moments is an important part of his management approach.

“I want to find out about people’s character, not just when times are good but when times are difficult as well,” he said.

With Chelsea only six points behind Aston Villa in the race for Champions League places, Rosenior believes discipline and focus will be crucial during the season’s final weeks.
