Arsenal has secured a coveted spot in the Champions League final for only the second time in their history, marking their first appearance in the showpiece event in two decades. The Gunners overcame Atletico Madrid in a tense semi-final, with 24-year-old Bukayo Saka emerging as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 aggregate victory.
Following the triumph at the Emirates Stadium, where Saka netted the only goal of the second leg, attention quickly turned to who Arsenal might face in the final. When pressed by CBS Sports’ Micah Richards about his preferred opponent between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Bayern Munich, Saka offered a teasingly evasive response, hinting at an unspoken preference.
Semi-final triumph and emotional scenes
The semi-final clash against Atletico Madrid saw Arsenal navigate a challenging tie, ultimately prevailing 2-1 on aggregate. Saka’s crucial strike at home ensured their progression, sparking jubilant celebrations among players and fans alike. The atmosphere at the Emirates was palpable, a sentiment echoed by midfielder Declan Rice, who is considered one of the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or this year.
“I can’t describe it to be honest with you,” Rice told Arsenal’s official website at full-time. “It’s been coming, this night at the Emirates in general, I think it’s the best night at the Emirates that I’ve witnessed, even better than the Real Madrid game last year. From the moment we drove in today, the coaches stopped and we thought, what’s going on? Because usually we just drive straight in, and the next thing we just see all the flares and the fans and the goosebumps from all the players looking out the window, it was just incredible.” Rice credited the fans for their energy, stating they “played a massive part tonight in making us win.”

A choice between reigning champions and a familiar foe
Arsenal will now prepare to face either reigning Champions League champions PSG or German giants Bayern Munich. Both potential opponents present distinct challenges and intriguing narratives. PSG, who knocked out Liverpool and Chelsea earlier in the campaign, defeated Arsenal in last season’s Champions League semi-finals, a result that could fuel a desire for revenge within the Arsenal camp. Conversely, Arsenal convincingly beat Bayern Munich in the league phase of the current campaign, which some speculate might make them a more favourable opponent.
When asked about his preference, Saka remained tight-lipped, but his words, reported by GIVEMESPORT, suggested a clear internal choice. “You can’t ask me that! You know I’ll have to give a media trained answer! You know deep down who we want to face, that’s all I’ll say,” he remarked, leaving fans to speculate on whether he secretly desires a shot at redemption against PSG or a repeat performance against Bayern.
The Champions League final is scheduled for May 30 and will take place at the Puskas Arena in Hungary, where Arsenal will aim to be crowned champions of Europe for the very first time.
