The future of Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr is under intense scrutiny, with Premier League champions Manchester City reportedly leading the race to sign the 25-year-old winger. The speculation comes as Vinicius Jr approaches the final 12 months of his contract and Real Madrid grapples with escalating internal tensions, including a recent training ground bust-up.

Manchester City are understood to be closely monitoring Vinicius Jr’s situation, with Arsenal and Chelsea also keeping tabs on developments, according to TEAMtalk. The Brazilian international’s current deal at the Santiago Bernabéu is set to expire in just over a year, and discussions regarding an extension, which hit a snag in 2025, were set to be revisited this summer. However, Real Madrid reportedly issued a clear ultimatum last year: failure to sign a new deal this summer would result in his sale.

Internal turmoil at Real Madrid

The transfer rumours emerge against a backdrop of growing unrest within the Real Madrid camp. On Thursday, May 7, a training ground bust-up between midfielders Aurélien Tchouaméni and Fede Valverde resulted in Valverde being taken to hospital for treatment on a head injury. He was later diagnosed with cranioencephalic trauma, a type of concussion. Real Madrid has since opened disciplinary proceedings against both players.

Valverde addressed the incident in a statement posted to his Instagram account, expressing regret and clarifying the nature of the altercation. “At no point did my team-mate hit me, and I didn’t hit him either, although I understand it’s easier for you to believe we came to blows or that it was intentional, but that didn’t happen,” Valverde wrote. “I feel that my anger about the situation, my frustration at seeing some of us struggling to get through the end of the season on our last legs, giving it our all, pushed me to the point of arguing with a team-mate. I’m sorry. I’m truly sorry because this situation hurts me; this moment we’re going through is painful. Real Madrid is one of the most important things in my life, and I can’t just turn a blind eye to it. The result is a build-up of things that culminate in a senseless fight, damaging my image and leaving room for doubt – for people to fabricate stories, slander me, and sensationalise an incident. I have no doubt that any disagreements we might have off the field cease to exist on it, and if I have to defend the team inside a stadium, I’ll be the first to do so.”

Adding to the internal friction, there have also been reports of a feud between full-back Álvaro Carreras and centre-back Antonio Rüdiger, further highlighting the challenging atmosphere at the club.

Vinicius Jr’s impressive form and City connection

Despite the off-field distractions, Vinicius Jr has enjoyed a stellar season, registering 21 goals and 14 assists for Real Madrid. His exceptional performances saw him emerge as a Ballon d’Or contender in 2024, a ceremony Real Madrid notably boycotted after learning Manchester City midfielder Rodri was set to win the prestigious award. This led to Manchester City fans unveiling a banner mocking Vinicius Jr, to which the player responded with defiance.

“I saw it, I saw the banner,” Vinicius Jr said at the time. “Whenever the opposing fans do things like that, they give me more strength to have a great game, and here I have done it.”

With his contract situation unresolved and internal tensions simmering, the coming summer transfer window could prove pivotal for Vinicius Jr’s career and Real Madrid’s immediate future.
