Pressure is mounting on Arne Slot, Liverpool’s manager, following a season that has seen the club’s performance gradually drift away from initial expectations. A recent 1-1 draw with Chelsea left Liverpool in fourth place in the league, a significant 17 points behind leaders Arsenal, prompting pundit Tony Cascarino to suggest a potential change in leadership.
Slot’s challenging start at Anfield
Slot inherited the unenviable task of succeeding the highly successful Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, a transition many observers predicted would be fraught with difficulty. While securing a Champions League qualification spot is often seen as a successful season for many clubs, for Liverpool, particularly with Arsenal so far ahead, it is not considered sufficient. Cascarino highlighted the growing discontent among the fanbase, according to EPL Index.
“The booings are happening more regularly at Liverpool now,” Cascarino stated. “I want Arne Slot to get to the end of the season and then Liverpool to make a call. I’m concerned because it’s not good.” This sentiment underscores the increasing scrutiny on Slot as the season progresses.
Iraola’s rising stock and the Hughes connection
Amidst the speculation surrounding Slot’s future, Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as a name being discussed as a potential successor. Iraola’s reputation has soared due to the impressive transformation of his Bournemouth side. After initially struggling to secure wins upon his arrival, his team has since demonstrated what Cascarino describes as “Champions League form,” with players showing significant improvement under his guidance.

A key factor fueling this speculation is the existing professional relationship between Iraola and Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes. Hughes was instrumental in bringing Iraola to Bournemouth, a connection Cascarino believes could be significant.
“He brought him to Bournemouth and now he’s at Liverpool. He did that negotiation. He was there,” Cascarino explained. “You have connections in football and people you deal with. He’d have dealt with the agent. He’d have worked with him. Now, I’m putting two and two and making five, but it’s not that unlikely that a club like Liverpool could look at him.”
While Liverpool has not publicly indicated that Slot’s position is under immediate threat, the context of a season falling short of expectations, combined with Iraola’s impressive tactical approach and his link to Hughes, ensures that speculation will continue to swirl around the Anfield dugout.
