Liverpool FC has released images and details of a planned permanent memorial at Anfield dedicated to former forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. The brothers tragically died in a car crash in the Spanish province of Zamora last summer, aged 28 and 25 respectively, as reported by BBC Sport.
The memorial, titled ‘Forever 20’, aims to commemorate their lives and the profound bond they shared, acknowledging the widespread grief and tributes from fans globally. André Silva was also a footballer, playing for Portuguese second division club Penafiel at the time of his passing.
‘Forever 20’: A tribute to a life and a bond
The design of the memorial is rich with symbolism, reflecting Diogo Jota’s impact at Liverpool and personal aspects of both brothers’ lives. Central to the design is a flowing heart sculpture, a direct nod to Jota’s iconic goal celebration that became synonymous with his time on Merseyside. When viewed from different angles, the sculpture ingeniously reveals the numbers 20 and 30, representing the shirt numbers worn by the brothers during their playing careers.
Located on 97 Avenue at Anfield, the memorial will stand on a Granby Rock-faced stone plinth. This plinth will feature a laser-engraved dedication to both brothers and will also incorporate the lyrics to Jota’s famous song, which Liverpool fans traditionally sing in the 20th minute of every game. Personal touches extending beyond football are also included, such as a games controller detail resting on the plinth, reflecting Diogo Jota’s life interests.

A legacy woven into Anfield’s fabric
In a poignant gesture of remembrance, physical tributes left by fans outside Anfield since Jota’s death have been recycled and incorporated into the stone plinth. Liverpool FC stated about this unique process: “This unique recycling process ensures the voices and emotions shared by fans at the time become a permanent and enduring part of this memorial.”
Diogo Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, quickly establishing himself as a fan favourite. During his tenure, he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the club. His time on Merseyside was marked by significant success, including winning:
- Premier League: 2024–25
- EFL Cup (Carabao Cup): 2021–22, 2023–24
- FA Cup: 2021–22
- FA Community Shield: 2022
The club has not yet announced the official unveiling date for the memorial. However, Liverpool FC outlined its purpose on their official website, stating it “will serve as a permanent symbol of love, unity and remembrance, and a place where everyone can reflect, remember and pay their respects.”
