Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal is set to leave the club at the end of the current season, bringing to a close a remarkable 23-year association with the Spanish giants. The 34-year-old right-back, whose contract expires at the end of June, will be honored during Real Madrid’s final La Liga match of the season against Athletic Club at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, May 23, at 20:00 BST, according to BBC Sport and an official announcement from Real Madrid C.F.

Carvajal’s journey with Real Madrid began in 2002 when he joined their esteemed academy. He spent a decade honing his skills in the youth ranks before making his first-team debut in 2013. His path included a brief but impactful season at Bayer Leverkusen, after which Real Madrid promptly activated a buy-back clause to bring him back to the Santiago Bernabeu, a decision that would prove instrumental in the club’s unprecedented success.

A legacy of unparalleled success

Over his 13 seasons in the first team, Carvajal amassed 450 appearances, scoring 14 goals, and establishing himself as one of the most decorated players in football history. His trophy cabinet boasts an astonishing 27 titles with Real Madrid, a testament to his enduring quality and the club’s dominance during his tenure. Among his most significant achievements are:

Six Champions League titles, making him one of only five players to reach this milestone. Notably, he is the sole player to have started in all six of these victorious finals.

Beyond his club accolades, Carvajal has been a mainstay for the Spanish national team since 2014, earning 51 caps. He played a pivotal role in Spain’s Nations League victory in 2023 and their triumph at the 2024 European Championship.

Recent challenges and a changing guard

The 2024 season saw Carvajal continue to perform at an elite level, earning a place in the FIFPro 2024 World XI and receiving The Best Fifa Men’s World XI award. He was also named the best player of the 2024 Champions League final, where he scored the opening goal against Borussia Dortmund. Despite these individual accolades, the defender has faced increasing challenges, including a cruciate ligament tear in October 2024 and subsequent knee injury issues.

These injuries, coupled with the arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold last summer, limited Carvajal to just 892 minutes in La Liga this season. Real Madrid will conclude the season trophyless for the second consecutive year, marking a period of transition for the club.

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez paid tribute to Carvajal, stating, “Dani Carvajal is a legend and a symbol of Real Madrid and its academy. His image alongside our beloved and remembered Alfredo Di Stéfano laying the first stone of Ciudad Real Madrid will forever remain in the hearts of all madridistas and in the history of our club. Carvajal has always exemplified the values of Real Madrid. This is and will always be his home.”

Carvajal’s departure signals the end of an era for Real Madrid, as one of its most loyal and successful servants bids farewell to the club he has called home for over two decades. His legacy as a leader, a symbol, and a serial winner will undoubtedly endure.
