According to SPORTbible, the Premier League could see an unprecedented nine English clubs competing in Europe next season if a specific chain of results unfolds.

The complex permutations hinge significantly on Aston Villa, who have already secured their return to the Champions League. Unai Emery’s side triumphed in the Europa League final, defeating Freiburg 3-0 with goals from Youri Tielemans, Emi Buendia, and Morgan Rogers. This victory marked Emery’s fifth Europa League title, achieved with a third different club, and guaranteed Villa a spot in Europe’s premier club competition.

The Champions League domino effect

While Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United have already locked in their Champions League berths, Aston Villa’s current fourth-place standing in the Premier League adds another layer of intrigue. If Villa were to finish fifth in the domestic league, England would be allocated an additional Champions League spot as part of the European Performance Spot (EPS). This extra place would then extend down to the sixth-placed team in the Premier League.

For this specific scenario to materialise, two key results are required:

  • Aston Villa to lose to Manchester City in Pep Guardiola’s final game
  • Liverpool to beat Brentford so Villa finish fifth

Should these results occur, the sixth spot in the Premier League would become a Champions League qualification position. Currently, Bournemouth occupies that sixth position, placing them in an unexpected but potentially historic contention for the Champions League.

Europa and Conference League battles

Beyond the Champions League race, the scramble for Europa League and Conference League spots remains equally fierce. Brighton, currently seventh, and Chelsea, one point behind in eighth, are best positioned to claim these remaining European places if the aforementioned Champions League scenario plays out.

However, several other clubs still harbour European ambitions:

  • Sunderland could qualify for the Europa League if they beat Chelsea and Brighton lose to Manchester United on the final day.
  • Brighton could still reach the Champions League by finishing sixth if they defeat United and Bournemouth lose to Nottingham Forest.

Adding to the drama, Crystal Palace is set to contest the Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano, in what will be Oliver Glasner’s final game at the helm. A historic victory for Palace in Leipzig would see them qualify for the Europa League. The club had initially qualified for the 2024/25 Europa League via the FA Cup, but was subsequently demoted to the Conference League due to UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules, as reported by Dale Johnson of BBC.
