In a remarkable late-career surge, Sorana Cîrstea has ascended to a career-best 18th position in the latest WTA rankings released on Monday. The achievement comes at a poignant moment for the 36-year-old Romanian, who is reportedly in her final year of professional competition.
Cîrstea’s significant climb of nine places was fueled by her impressive run to the semifinals at the recent Rome tournament. This performance garnered her enough points to reach a total of 1,985, surpassing her previous personal best ranking of 21st, which she achieved over a decade ago on August 12, 2013, according to Digi24.
Cîrstea outranks notable competitors
The veteran now finds herself ahead of several prominent names in women’s tennis, solidifying her place among the elite. Her current ranking sees her positioned above:
- Madison Keys (19th)
- Elise Mertens (23rd)
- Jelena Ostapenko (29th)
While Cîrstea celebrates a personal milestone, other Romanian players experienced shifts in their rankings. Jaqueline Cristian saw a drop of five places, settling at 33rd with 1,382 points, and Gabriela Ruse fell four spots to 71st, holding 928 points.
