Turki Alalshikh, the prominent Saudi boxing chief and government official, is reportedly in advanced discussions regarding a significant investment in English Championship club Derby County. The potential deal aims to inject crucial financial assistance into the club, boosting its spending power ahead of the upcoming season.

According to SportBible, Alalshikh has held detailed talks with Derby County owner David Clowes. The discussions are now awaiting a “green light” from regulatory authorities before any agreement can be finalized, as reported by The Telegraph.

Regulatory scrutiny and IFR requirements

The proposed investment faces scrutiny from the Independent Football Regulator (IFR), the body established in July 2025 with a mandate to protect and promote the sustainability of English football. For the IFR to approve the deal, Alalshikh must demonstrate that his funding is entirely separate from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund that owns Premier League club Newcastle United. This requirement was highlighted by The Times.

The exact nature of Alalshikh’s proposed investment in Derby County remains undisclosed. However, the discussions with Clowes suggest a move to provide financial backing that could significantly enhance the club’s capabilities in the transfer market.

Derby County’s ambitions and Alalshikh’s football history

Derby County, currently managed by former player John Eustace, finished eighth in the Championship table this past season, just four points shy of a play-off spot. Owner David Clowes had previously indicated an openness to selling up to 80% of his shareholding, provided he retained his position as club chairman.

Alalshikh is no stranger to football club ownership, having previously owned Egyptian side Pyramids and UD Almeria in Spain. His interest in English football has also surfaced before; last year, he was reported to have held talks with Bristol City regarding a potential investment, a claim confirmed by Bristol City CEO Tom Rawcliffe, though Alalshikh later denied the reports. Recent social media activity, with Alalshikh reportedly following accounts linked to Derby County, has further fueled speculation surrounding the current negotiations, according to The Times.

As the talks progress, all eyes will be on the Independent Football Regulator to see if Alalshikh’s proposed investment can clear the necessary hurdles and provide Derby County with the financial impetus it seeks.
