According to The Guardian, President Donald Trump is planning to attend one of the upcoming NBA Finals games featuring the New York Knicks. This potential appearance would mark a historic first, as no sitting president has ever attended the NBA Finals.

The Knicks secured their place in the championship series earlier this week, completing a dominant sweep in the Eastern Conference finals. Their decisive 130-93 victory in Game 4 on Monday night sealed their progression. They now await their opponent, either the Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs, in the best-of-seven series.

Dolan’s invitation and Trump’s sports presence

Trump revealed on Wednesday that he received an invitation from Knicks owner James Dolan, along with “numerous” other individuals. Dolan, a known friend and campaign donor to Trump, also owns the NHL’s Rangers and Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks play their home games.

Speaking to reporters during a cabinet meeting, Trump stated, “I think I’ll be going to one of the games, yeah. I was invited by numerous people and Jim – and I think I’ll be going.”

A New York native, Trump has a well-documented history of attending high-profile sporting events since his reelection. His past appearances include the Super Bowl, soccer’s Club World Cup final, tennis’s US Open, the Daytona 500, golf’s Ryder Cup, several other golf events, and college football’s national championship game. The White House lawn is even slated to host a UFC fight card next month, further highlighting his engagement with the sports world.

A historic potential appearance

The Knicks are set to host Games 3, 4, and 6 of the finals series at Madison Square Garden. These pivotal home fixtures are scheduled for:

• June 8 (Game 3)
• June 10 (Game 4)
• June 16 (Game 6)

This isn’t the first time Trump’s potential attendance at a Knicks playoff game has been reported. The New York Times reported on Tuesday that he had planned to attend Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, had that series extended beyond a sweep.
