Somali FIFA referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was set to make history as the first official from his nation at a World Cup, has been denied entry into the United States for the 2026 tournament. The highly-regarded official was turned away at Miami International Airport on June 6, despite possessing a diplomatic passport and previous assurances that his visa issues were resolved.

Artan, who arrived from Istanbul International Airport, was informed by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that he was being denied entry due to “vetting concerns” following a “routine” inspection. He was subsequently sent back to Turkiye. The incident has cast a shadow over his participation in the 2026 World Cup, which the United States will co-host with Canada and Mexico.

Visa issues resurface for top african official

Artan’s journey to secure his place at the World Cup has been fraught with administrative hurdles. He initially faced difficulties obtaining a visa, prompting support from the Somali embassy in Nairobi, which provided him with a diplomatic passport. However, this document was deemed “insufficient for the American authorities,” according to journalist Romain Molina. “Appointed by FIFA to officiate at the World Cup, Somali referee Omar Artan was denied entry to the United States,” Molina reported on social media. “Given his difficulties in obtaining a visa, he received support from the Somali embassy in Nairobi, which provided him with a diplomatic passport. This was insufficient for the American authorities, who immediately sent him back.”

The denial comes despite earlier reports from the Kenyan outlet The Eastleigh Voice, which stated Artan had “secured his United States visa,” clearing all administrative hurdles. A FIFA representative had also spoken to The Eastleigh Voice, confirming, “I can confirm that the visa issues have been fully resolved and he will now be available to officiate at the FIFA World Cup.”

Artan’s professional standing is considerable. He became a FIFA-listed referee in 2018 and has quickly risen through the ranks, earning significant accolades:

  • Officiated the 2025 CAF Champions League final second leg between Pyramids FC and Mamelodi Sundowns.
  • Named CAF’s African Referee of the Year for 2025.
  • Became the first Somali to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations, overseeing the group-stage fixture between Tunisia and Namibia in 2024.

DailySports.net has referred to him as “one of the best on the African continent.”

Broader concerns for 2026 tournament logistics

No clear explanation for the denial has been publicly provided by authorities, as noted by African journalist Micky Jnr, who reported on X (formerly Twitter) that “No clear explanation has been provided.” It remains unclear whether Artan will now be able to officiate at the tournament.

The incident adds to long-standing concerns regarding logistical challenges for players, staff, and fans entering the United States for the World Cup. Previous issues have included Iraqi World Cup striker Aymen Hussein being held for nearly seven hours at Chicago’s O’Hare airport, Iran having visa applications rejected for staff, and Scottish fans being denied travel permits.

CBP maintains that all travelers, including athletes and staff, are subject to inspection and vetting, with admissibility determinations made on a case-by-case basis using law enforcement, national security, and immigration information. However, the denial of a high-profile, FIFA-appointed official with a diplomatic passport raises questions about the consistency and transparency of these processes ahead of a major international event.
