Victor Wembanyama delivered a commanding performance on Monday night, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 115-111 victory over the New York Knicks in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. The win, the Spurs’ first in the series, cut the Knicks’ lead to 2-1 and snapped New York’s remarkable 13-game winning streak.

The 7-foot-4 Frenchman was instrumental in securing the crucial win, which prevented the Spurs from falling into an insurmountable 3-0 deficit. No NBA team has ever overcome such a series deficit in the Finals. Wembanyama, who had a late turnover in Game 2 that dashed the Spurs’ hopes, showcased his potential in his inaugural NBA Finals victory, finishing with:

  • 32 points
  • 8 rebounds
  • 6 assists

He was particularly dominant in the final quarter, contributing 10 points to help seal the win.

Knicks’ winning streak ends at Madison Square Garden

The defeat marked the first loss for the Knicks in 46 days, ending a dominant run that began after April 23 in Game 3 of their first-round series against Atlanta. Their 13-game winning streak was the second-longest in NBA postseason history. Playing in their first NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden since 1999, the Knicks missed an opportunity to move within one win of their first championship since 1973.

The game was a tightly contested affair, with both teams exchanging leads. The Spurs started strong, leading 33-22 after the first quarter. However, the Knicks battled back to take a 64-57 lead by halftime. San Antonio regained control in the final minutes, with key contributions from Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox. Castle, who finished with 23 points, hit a crucial 3-pointer with 1:53 remaining, extending the Spurs’ lead to 111-104. He then closed the scoring with two free throws with 6.8 seconds left.

For the Knicks, Jalen Brunson led the scoring with 32 points, while OG Anunoby added 28 points in the losing effort. According to The Independent, the Spurs’ victory sets the stage for a pivotal Game 4, scheduled for Wednesday night, followed by Game 5 on Saturday.
