England Test captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are under investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) following an alleged late-night altercation at a London nightclub. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, also involved Saracens rugby prospect Totoa Auvaa.
The fracas reportedly took place at Chelsea’s Rex Rooms nightclub. Stokes and Atkinson were present in the VIP area after celebrating England’s first Test victory against New Zealand. Earlier on Sunday, a larger group of England cricketers and Saracens players had gathered at the White House pub in Parson’s Green, following an end-of-season social for the rugby club.
According to the Telegraph, a confrontation began between Stokes, Atkinson, Auvaa, and a member of the cricketing security team. The Mirror reported that Auvaa allegedly threw a punch at Atkinson but instead struck an ECB security guard, who subsequently required stitches. Stokes and Atkinson were described by sources as “not the aggressors” in the incident, and police were not called to the scene.
Breach of team protocols and past warnings
The ECB confirmed an internal investigation is underway. “The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first Men’s Test against New Zealand,” an ECB statement read. “Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place. We are currently seeking further information, and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course. The Cricket Regulator has been informed and we will provide a further update when possible.”

Both Stokes and Atkinson were found to have broken the England men’s Test team’s latest curfew, set at midnight. Head coach Brendon McCullum has previously issued a clear warning to players, stating: “Don’t do anything that lands you on the front page of the paper and nothing good happens after midnight.”
This incident adds to a series of off-field issues for the England cricket team, including multiple drinking-related incidents during their Ashes campaign. White-ball captain Harry Brook was fined in November 2025 for a tussle with a nightclub bouncer, while Ben Duckett was dropped in 2017 after pouring a drink over James Anderson. Stokes himself missed the 2017-18 Ashes tour after being charged with affray following a Bristol nightclub incident, though he was later acquitted.
Saracens prospect’s future uncertain
Auvaa, a 21-year-old Saracens back-rower, was present with other Saracens players, including Theo McFarland and Ben Earl, though Earl was not involved in the altercation. Auvaa, who stands 6ft 5in and weighs 125kg, is considered one of Saracens’ top prospects, having captained Samoa U20s and Samoa A. He made 17 appearances for Ampthill in the second tier of English rugby last season but is yet to make his senior debut for Saracens.
Saracens issued their own statement on Monday, saying: “We are aware of an incident involving an academy player connected to Saracens on Sunday evening. The club is currently establishing the full facts and is in contact with the relevant authorities and individuals involved. Once this process is complete, the matter will be reviewed and addressed appropriately. We will make no further comment at this time.” The Telegraph reports that Auvaa’s future at the club “hangs by a thread.”
