The 26-year-old Atlético Madrid forward is at the center of a complex narrative involving a high-profile swap deal and a massive counter-offer from Catalonia.

According to a social media report by El Chiringuito TV, journalist Jota Jordi claims that Arsenal and Atlético Madrid have already finalized an agreement for Álvarez’s transfer.

The proposed deal would see the Premier League club pay €50 million while sending striker Viktor Gyökeres to the Spanish capital in return, with Jordi reporting that “Atlético has a finalized agreement with Arsenal to sell him for €50 million plus Gyökeres.”

Conflicting reports outline potential Arsenal swap deal

This reported agreement directly contradicts Atlético Madrid’s public and private stance regarding their star forward. During the same broadcast, Jordi revealed that Atlético CEO Gil Marín personally contacted Barcelona president Joan Laporta to firmly state that the forward is unavailable.

As described by Barca Blaugranes, Marín told Laporta explicitly that “Julián is not for sale.” This stark warning has not halted the rumors, however, as reports continue to surface detailing rival interests and lucrative alternative proposals.

Barcelona plans record post-World Cup bid

While Arsenal reportedly pursues an immediate swap, Barcelona is taking a more deliberate approach to secure the Argentine striker.

The Catalan club is preparing a substantial package worth €135 million, which could reach €150 million when factoring in performance-related add-ons. Rather than forcing a move during the current window, Barcelona intends to launch this ambitious bid after the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the firm resistance from Madrid, club officials at the Camp Nou remain optimistic that a financial package of this magnitude will eventually bring Atlético to the negotiating table once international tournament commitments are complete.
