Lionel Messi has spent most of his career making the impossible look ordinary on a football pitch.
Now, the Argentine icon has been placed in a very different kind of spectacle.
The 38-year-old features alongside Tom Holland in a new promotional teaser for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, bringing together one of football’s most marketable figures and one of the world’s biggest film franchises.
According to Marca, Messi’s unexpected appearance in the teaser quickly caught the attention of fans on social media.

A World Cup push with Messi at the centre
The timing is no coincidence.
With the World Cup dominating the sporting calendar, Sony Pictures has turned to Messi as part of a wider promotional push for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The result is a short but striking crossover: Holland appears as Peter Parker, while Messi becomes part of a campaign designed to connect football audiences with the upcoming Marvel release.
For Spanish-speaking fans in particular, the appearance carries obvious appeal. Messi remains the defining football figure of his generation across Argentina, Spain and much of Latin America, making him a natural face for a global campaign built around World Cup momentum.

Spider-Man meets football’s biggest name
According to Cadena SER, the teaser shows Messi using a new promotional tool called the Spidey Tracker to find Spider-Man.
Holland’s Peter Parker then reacts nervously before briefly leaving the scene and returning in his superhero suit.
The Spanish outlet described the clip as part of a global Sony Pictures campaign, created in collaboration with Samsung, which allows fans to follow Spider-Man “sightings” and unlock promotional experiences before the film’s release.
It is a classic marketing collision: Messi brings the football audience, Spider-Man brings the cinema audience, and the World Cup provides the perfect stage.

A new chapter for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man
Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks Holland’s fourth solo film as Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to Marvel’s official film page, the film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and is scheduled to be released on July 31, 2026.
The story follows Peter Parker in a New York that no longer remembers him, as he tries to continue life as Spider-Man while facing a new threat and a dangerous change in his own powers.
The cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo.

Messi’s reach goes far beyond football
Messi’s appearance in the teaser is brief, but the logic behind it is clear.
Few athletes can still cut through global culture in the way he does. Even late in his career, his name carries weight far beyond football, especially during a World Cup.
For Sony, the cameo offers instant visibility. For Messi, it is another example of how his image has moved from sport into mainstream entertainment.
The campaign does not need him to act like a film star. It only needs him to be Messi.
