A heated exchange erupted on the pitch following France’s last-32 World Cup victory, as Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill confronted Kylian Mbappe, accusing the Real Madrid star of a disrespectful handshake snub. The incident, which took place after the final whistle in Philadelphia, capped a tense match marked by aggressive play and a contentious refereeing performance.

According to reports, Gill offered his hand to Mbappe in a gesture of sportsmanship, but the French forward walked past him, opting instead to celebrate with the jubilant crowd. Gill reacted by throwing the match ball at Mbappe’s back, prompting a brief but intense confrontation near the centre circle.

Speaking after the match, Gill did not mince words regarding Mbappe’s actions. “Kylian Mbappe has p***ed me off. I stretched my hand to congratulate him, but he ignored me,” Gill stated, as reported by The Sun.

Physicality defines the encounter

The post-match drama was a culmination of a fiercely contested game. Mbappe had scored France’s only goal from the penalty spot in the 70th minute, securing their progression to the quarter-finals. However, the match was characterized by Paraguay’s physical and combative style, particularly in a frustrating second half.

Despite committing a flurry of fouls throughout the game, Paraguay remarkably did not receive a single yellow card. In contrast, France was issued three yellow cards. Paraguayan players Juan Jose Caceres, Andres Cubas, and Matias Galarza were noted for their aggressive play, with Galarza specifically targeting Mbappe in the dying minutes of the match.

Gill defended his team’s robust approach, suggesting it was simply their nature. “This is football, if they’re not used to this, what can we do? Paraguay is like that, it’s a tough team. From the first moment we set out to make ourselves felt on the field, that if the ball gets through, the man doesn’t,” he explained.

France anticipates tough challenge

The French camp, however, appeared to have anticipated such a confrontational encounter. Midfielder Rayan Cherki highlighted France’s readiness to match their opponents’ intensity. “Today we reminded everyone that the French team is not just about football, it’s about whoever wants to fight us. That is what you should be prepared for,” Cherki said in a post-match interview.

Mbappe himself had indicated that France expected a tough, combative match rather than an open game, suggesting Paraguay might have underestimated France’s ability to match physicality. France now advances to face Morocco in the quarter-finals, a rematch of their 2022 World Cup semi-final clash in Qatar, which France won 2-0. Paraguay’s World Cup journey, meanwhile, ends in the last-32.
