Andoni Iraola has the right winger. Getting the wrong tactical framework around him would waste £123m.
That was Thierry Henry’s verdict on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football after Liverpool confirmed the deal with Paris Saint-Germain on August 31. Henry’s central point was direct: Bradley Barcola works when the game is built around what he actually does well.
“There is something, a big thing about Barcola, it depends how you’re going to play,” Henry said.
“Are you going to be able to put him in one v one situations?”

His verdict on the 24-year-old’s pace was blunt.
“What you have also, if you want to play on the counter, he’s fast as hell.”
The warning followed in the same breath.
“But are you going to make him defend way more than he’s going to attack? That may not be something he’s very suitable for.”

The £145m target Liverpool eventually landed
Liverpool paid a guaranteed £106m with up to £17m in add-ons after PSG had initially set an asking price of £145m. Barcola signed a five-year contract and inherited the number 29 shirt, becoming the club’s second-most expensive signing behind Alexander Isak’s £125m purchase from Newcastle a year earlier.
He arrived with back-to-back Champions League winners’ medals from PSG’s 2024-25 and 2025-26 campaigns and a France call-up already booked for Zinedine Zidane’s first international window in charge of Les Bleus.
Iraola blames cramp after Atlético withdrawal
Henry’s warning about workload has found real-world echo. Barcola came off the bench in the 64th minute of the 2-0 win at Ipswich Town on September 4 for his Liverpool debut. Five days later, his full home debut against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League ended in the 60th minute when he pulled up.
Iraola told reporters afterward the issue was cramp rather than a muscle problem, explaining that the winger had not played competitively since France’s third-place playoff at the World Cup on July 18 and had missed the entirety of PSG’s pre-season.

Barcola then joined up with France, coming through Zidane’s 1-0 win in Turkey on September 25 without further issue.
What Henry wants from Barcola himself
For all the tactical caveats, Henry was clear where the ceiling sits.
“Very excited. Very excited,” he said when asked how Liverpool fans should feel about the signing.
His one demand of the player was more clinical.

“He needs to finish a tiny bit better. And if he does that, a lot of teams will be in trouble with him.”
