Spain’s World Cup celebrations could soon leave Marc Cucurella with a permanent reminder of the triumph.

Before the tournament, the defender promised to have a tattoo of Luis de la Fuente’s face if Spain became world champions. Following Sunday’s victory over Argentina, there is no longer any way out for the 27-year-old.

“If we win the World Cup, I would get a tattoo of Luis de la Fuente’s face,” Cucurella told Spanish radio station COPE, as quoted by The Football Faithful.

De la Fuente expects promise to be kept

De la Fuente was reminded of the pledge after Spain’s victory and made it clear that he expects Cucurella to keep his word.

“I am too old for tattoos but my players are men of their word and I know they will stick to their word,” the Spain coach said at his post-match press conference, according to Reuters.

“They made a mistake and they will stick to it. I am not that ugly.”

Asked where the tattoo should be placed, De la Fuente suggested that Cucurella might prefer somewhere discreet.

“Maybe a part of the body where it is not visible,” he said. “But when you say something you have to stick to your word.”

It would not be the first time Cucurella has followed through on a promise after winning a major trophy. He dyed his distinctive long hair red following Spain’s European Championship victory in 2024.

Torres seals Spain’s second title

The tattoo promise became a reality after Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 following extra time at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Argentina were reduced to 10 men when Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card. Substitute Ferran Torres then scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, securing Spain’s second men’s World Cup title and their first since 2010, as described in FIFA’s match report.

The victory also completed a remarkable period under De la Fuente, who has now led Spain to the Nations League, the European Championship and the World Cup.

For Cucurella, however, the celebrations are likely to include an appointment with a tattoo artist—and a careful decision over exactly where his coach’s face should go.
