The upcoming Masters 1000 Canadian Open in Montreal, scheduled from 2-13 August, is set to proceed without some of the sport’s biggest names, including Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alcaraz. Their withdrawals have once again brought the demanding nature of the ATP calendar into sharp focus, prompting calls for significant adjustments to protect player welfare and the integrity of flagship tournaments, as reported by BBC.

Jannik Sinner, fresh from his Wimbledon triumph this month, announced his withdrawal to prioritise his health. This decision echoes a pattern seen with other top players, as Novak Djokovic also opted out of last year’s Canadian Open in Toronto. Carlos Alcaraz, another high-profile absentee, is currently recovering from a wrist injury that has sidelined him since April, according to BBC.

Tournament director calls for ATP adjustments

Valerie Tetreault, the Canadian Open tournament director, expressed disappointment over the repeated withdrawals, particularly from players who also missed the previous year’s event. “We are obviously very disappointed that Jannik and Novak won’t be joining us in Montreal this year, especially after they also withdrew from last year’s tournament in Toronto,” Tetreault stated, as quoted by BBC. While acknowledging the players’ need to prioritise health, she highlighted a systemic issue. “That said, we believe the frequency of these last-minute withdrawals in the last few years raises a broader issue for our sport.”

Tetreault emphasised the importance of Masters 1000 events, which are the highest level below Grand Slams, to fans. “Masters 1000 events are among the flagship tournaments on the tour, and fans rightfully expect to see the world’s best compete,” she noted, confirming discussions are already underway with the ATP. “We are already in discussions with the ATP to ensure this matter received serious consideration. We firmly believe adjustments are needed in the near future to better protect the integrity of our Masters 1000 events while remaining mindful of the realities players face,” BBC reported.

Player health and the relentless calendar

The concerns voiced by tournament organisers are mirrored by the players themselves, who navigate an 11-month calendar. Seven of the nine existing Masters 1000 events now span 12 days, adding to the physical toll. The Canadian Open itself is strategically placed before the Cincinnati Open, another Masters 1000 event, and just ahead of the US Open, which begins on 30 August.

The impact of this relentless schedule has been evident across the tour. Britain’s Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu both pulled out of Wimbledon on the eve of their home Grand Slam due to injuries, with Draper battling a long-term arm issue. Earlier this year, women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek withdrew from the WTA 1000 Dubai Championships just two days before its start, according to BBC.

Players have been vocal about the pressures. Jack Draper described the amount of injuries suffered by leading players as “pretty worrying.” Carlos Alcaraz, speaking in September 2024, offered a stark assessment of the schedule’s intensity: “They are going to kill us in some way.”
