Luke Littler had not seen the artwork before he stood in front of it. His grandmother had.

The day before the official unveiling, Littler’s nan spotted the mural being finished from a passing bus, got off to speak to the artists, and rang his father to tell the family.

By the time Littler pulled up at Warrington’s Golden Square shopping centre on Thursday, half the household already knew what to expect.

“It’s amazing. My nan was on the bus going past yesterday and she got off to speak to the guys,” Littler said, as reported by Hello Rayo.

“Then she phoned my dad and mentioned it, so she saw it before all of us. We all can’t believe it.”

The mural stands more than 11 metres tall on a wall of the Golden Square shopping centre in the middle of town.

Littler’s sponsor Target Darts also used the occasion to donate darts equipment to 63 schools in the Warrington area.

Four days after a record

Littler had reason to be relaxed about a portrait on a wall. In Blackpool on Sunday he had thrashed Gerwyn Price 18-9 to defend his World Matchplay title, averaging 111.53 in the final and 111.04 across the tournament. The old Matchplay tournament average record, held by Phil Taylor, was 106.31.

The win reclaimed the Phil Taylor Trophy and the £225,000 first prize, and it stretched Littler’s run of consecutive wins in PDC major matches over 20 legs to 28, according to Sky Sports.

It was also his 10th consecutive win over Price, and sits inside a 2026 in which Littler has already won every PDC major on the calendar so far, the World Championship, World Masters, UK Open, Premier League, World Cup and now the World Matchplay.

At the mural, Littler told Sky Sports his eye is on the rest of the 2026 season.

“With performances like that not many people can stop me. I’m feeling very good. The clean sweep is very much on.”

The Phil Taylor question

The Matchplay average was another Taylor benchmark that Littler has touched this year, and the comparisons follow him wherever he plays. He waved them off in Warrington.

“It is amazing to see the comparisons with Phil Taylor, but I am just myself. If I do go on and beat his records then I will be the best, but for now Phil will always be the ‘GOAT’.”

Of the mural itself he offered the verdict a teenager gives when confronted with an 11-metre image of his own face: “I didn’t want to see it, but they’ve done a really good job.”
