One of the most decorated open-water swimmers of her generation will not return to competition. Beck confirmed the decision during an appearance on German television.
The 29-year-old won three world titles, three European titles and the overall Open Water Swimming World Cup during a career that included three Olympic Games.
Two-year break becomes permanent
Beck had already decided before the Paris Olympics in 2024 that she needed time away from competition. She wanted to consider her future and develop projects outside professional swimming.
Her final official race took place in October 2024. What initially began as an open-ended break has now become a permanent retirement.

Beck explained that she was enjoying her new work in events and television too much to return to the demands of full-time training. She has already worked as a co-commentator for German broadcaster ZDF.
According to the German Swimming Federation, she also wants athletes to feel able to prepare for life after competition without that being interpreted as a lack of commitment.
A career transformed in open water
Beck began as a pool swimmer and competed in the 800-metre freestyle at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She finished 25th and subsequently moved into open-water swimming.
The change transformed her career. She won world bronze over five kilometres in 2019 before helping Germany take gold in the mixed 4×1.5-kilometre relay at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest.

Beck also claimed silver in the individual 10-kilometre race at the same championships. Her finest tournament arrived one year later in Fukuoka.
The German won both the five and 10-kilometre world titles in Japan. World Aquatics’ official records therefore list five World Championship medals, including three golds.
She completed another double at the 2024 European Championships in Belgrade, winning the five and 10-kilometre events. Her other European title came over 10 kilometres in Rome in 2022.
Beck also won the overall Open Water Swimming World Cup in 2023. At the end of 2021, she had moved to Italy to train alongside one of the sport’s leading international groups.

Olympic medal remained missing
Her greatest disappointment was the absence of an Olympic medal. Beck competed at three Games, although her first appearance in Rio came inside the swimming pool.
She finished fifth in the 10-kilometre marathon at the delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Three years later, she entered Paris as a reigning world and European champion but finished ninth in the Seine.
Beck subsequently reported severe gastrointestinal symptoms following the race. However, no official link between her illness and the water quality was established.
The result in Paris did not erase an exceptional period in which she became one of Germany’s most successful female open-water swimmers.

A new life still connected to water
Beck intends to remain visible in swimming through broadcasting, events and charitable projects. She has campaigned for cleaner water and for more children to receive swimming lessons.
In July, World Aquatics appointed her as an ambassador for its Discover Water programme, which promotes swimming ability and water safety internationally.
Her competitive career is over, but her work around the sport is continuing. At 29, Beck is leaving elite swimming on her own terms rather than attempting a comeback she no longer wants.
