Barcelona’s home ground is now the frontrunner to stage European club football’s biggest night on 2 June 2029, according to Barca Universal. A UEFA announcement is not expected until next month’s Executive Committee meeting in Greece, where the vote will come down to Camp Nou or Wembley.

Barcelona’s dossier has the backing of the Spanish Government, the Generalitat de Catalunya, Barcelona City Council and the Royal Spanish Football Federation. The two-horse race was confirmed in June, when the club finalised its bid and Wembley emerged as the only rival.

A vote for Barcelona would bring the final back to Camp Nou for the first time since 26 May 1999, when Manchester United beat Bayern Munich 2-1 with two injury-time goals to seal their treble. The ground previously staged the 1989 final, an AC Milan 4-0 win over Steaua Bucharest.

A capacity built for the biggest night

Once the Espai Barca project is done, Camp Nou will seat 104,600, keeping its status as Europe’s largest club stadium. That capacity is central to Barcelona’s bid. No recent final has come close, and Wembley seats 90,000.

The rebuild has run longer than first planned. According to StadiumDB, the full ground, including a new retractable roof, is now targeted for 2027, with roof installation set to begin that summer. Wembley has already hosted eight European Cup or Champions League finals, most recently in 2024.

Munich already locked in for 2028

Munich’s Allianz Arena was confirmed as the 2028 host after being the only city to bid, AFP reported. The 2027 final has already been awarded to Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano, which would send UEFA back to Spain within two seasons if Camp Nou is chosen.

Barcelona are due to reopen the third tier of Camp Nou during the 2026-27 season, before another short move-out for the roof works. Barca News Network was first to report UEFA’s preference for Camp Nou over Wembley. The Executive Committee vote takes place in Thessaloniki on Tuesday, 15 September.
