Bruno Fernandes scored three times and set up a fifth as Manchester United came from behind to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday, 30 August. Sitting in the Sky Sports studio afterwards, Gary Neville delivered the line that framed the day.
“He is exceptional. He’s the best United signing in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era by an absolute mile,” Neville said.
It is a verdict that reaches back through more than a decade of expensive misfires, cult favourites and short-lived saviours at Old Trafford, and lands on the Portugal international as the one arrival Neville is willing to place beyond argument.
The reply to a bad week
Ipswich led at Old Trafford through Leif Davis in the 29th minute. Fernandes equalised in the 40th, converted a penalty in the 61st and completed his hat-trick in the 68th before teeing up Bryan Mbeumo for the fifth. Chuba Akpom pulled a late second back for Ipswich.

The captain had been criticised in the wake of the opening-weekend defeat at Hull City, with his leadership publicly questioned. Neville framed the response through the individual prize Fernandes collected at the end of last season, the PFA Players’ Player of the Year.
“I think the biggest accolade that you can get in football is being voted the PFA Player of the Year, because that’s your fellow professionals,” Neville said.
Carrick refuses the party
Head coach Michael Carrick was careful with the celebrations afterwards.
“He’s won awards this week and bounced back from last week,” Carrick told reporters. “We’re not getting carried away. We haven’t cracked it, there’s a long way to go.”

Fernandes’ current deal runs to June 2027, with United holding an option for a further year on his reported £250,000-per-week contract. A renewal proposal worth a reported £375,000 per week has been described as the club’s route to keeping him tied to Old Trafford beyond that.
The problem in the same broadcast
Neville’s praise arrived alongside a pointed warning to Carrick in the same Sky Sports appearance, delivered before kick-off.
“In a perfect world, if you’d said to Michael Carrick, ‘what would you have done this summer?’ he would have said, ‘rebuild the midfield, and I would rebuild the defence,'” Neville said.
“If they could get a centre-back and a full-back before the window closes, that will stop problems that we know we’re going to see.”

United have conceded four goals in two league matches against newly promoted Hull and Ipswich, and Fernandes’ response day did not change Neville’s brief on the back four. The English transfer window closes at 11pm on Tuesday, 1 September 2026.
