Five games, five United titles

Manchester United supporters searching for signs of a return to the top have been handed one from an unlikely source: Grand Theft Auto.

A viral Instagram post published by 433 highlights an extraordinary connection between the release years of the five numbered GTA games and United’s Premier League success.

The original Grand Theft Auto arrived in 1997, the year United lifted the title under Sir Alex Ferguson. GTA II followed in 1999, when the club completed its historic Treble, before GTA III was released in another championship year in 2001.

The pattern continued when GTA IV arrived in 2008, the same year United won both the Premier League and Champions League. GTA V was then released in 2013, months after Ferguson had delivered the club’s 20th English league title.

Official Premier League records confirm that United won the competition in all five calendar years.

The coincidence is not quite perfect

The theory requires some creative interpretation. United did not necessarily become champions after each game was released. GTA I, III and V, for example, arrived after the relevant Premier League seasons had already finished.

It also only counts the numbered games in the series. Major releases such as Vice City in 2002 and San Andreas in 2004 have conveniently been excluded because United failed to win the league in either year.

Still, the coincidence remains striking. Every time Rockstar Games has released a numbered GTA title, Manchester United have ended that calendar year as the reigning English champions.

GTA VI puts the theory to the test

The long-awaited GTA VI is scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026. Rockstar recently presented an extended look at the game, captured entirely on PlayStation 5, through its official website.

That release comes several months before the 2026/27 Premier League season is decided, meaning United would technically need to win the title before GTA VI arrives if the original calendar-year pattern is to remain completely intact.

After more than a decade without a league championship, even the most optimistic United supporter would struggle to describe the coincidence as a genuine prediction.

Yet football fans have always found meaning in strange statistics, rituals and supposed omens. Five numbered games have so far been accompanied by five Manchester United titles.
