Chelsea’s most expensive British buy did not need long. Rogers, signed from Aston Villa for a national record fee in July, scored on his Premier League debut in a 3-2 win at Fulham on 24 August, giving Alonso a winning start to his first Chelsea season.
The 23-year-old England forward struck four minutes before halftime after a cutback from Maxence Lacroix, and was withdrawn in the 82nd minute. It was his first competitive match since England’s third-place playoff at the 2026 World Cup five weeks earlier.
“It was a great game to play in. Obviously to score and help the team win, that’s everything that I wanted from a debut,” Rogers said afterwards.
“I still think there are more gears to go.”
The record he broke, and the one he took
Rogers signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge running until 2033, and the £117m fee took him past Elliot Anderson’s £116m move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City earlier in the same window to become the most expensive British player in football history, Sky Sports reported.
For Chelsea, the fee also surpassed the £115m paid to Brighton for Moisés Caicedo in 2023 to set a new club record.
Arsenal had made Rogers a leading summer target and were in talks with the player, according to Sky Sports, before Chelsea moved with a valuation the north London club declined to match.
“I’m so excited. For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid,” Rogers said in an interview released by Goal after the move was confirmed.

Alonso’s window closes on Tuesday
Rogers is the centrepiece of a summer led by Alonso, who took charge on 1 July on a four-year contract after leaving Real Madrid, and joins alongside Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix (£51m) and Sporting winger Geovany Quenda (£40m).
Chelsea’s total outlay for the summer stands at £236.5m, but the club is running a net surplus after sales including Nicolas Jackson to Aston Villa (£65m), Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid (£52m), Andrey Santos to Manchester United (£50m) and Liam Delap to Nottingham Forest (£50m), according to Sports Mole in a tracker last updated on Tuesday.
The English transfer window shuts at 11pm on 1 September.
What Villa lose, and what they used it for
For Unai Emery at Aston Villa, Rogers had been the primary creator, scoring 14 goals with 11 assists in 55 appearances across all competitions last season and named Europa League Player of the Year. He had won 22 England caps, five of them at the World Cup.

Villa have used the fee to reshape a squad that has also lost Youri Tielemans (£36m to Manchester United), Donyell Malen (£21.6m to Roma) and Lucas Digne (£8.5m to Paris Saint-Germain). Jackson has arrived from Chelsea to lead the attack.
Middlesbrough, who sold Rogers to Villa in 2024, are set to receive £20.3m through a 20 percent profit-share clause inserted in the original deal.
