The 2026 summer transfer window shattered previous spending records, with five deals alone surpassing the €100 million mark. Leading the charge were Premier League clubs, whose collective expenditure on new signings soared past €4 billion (£3.5bn), setting an unprecedented benchmark for a single transfer period.

Amidst this financial frenzy, a study by FootballTransfers has highlighted 11 transfers as significantly overpriced. These deals collectively amounted to an astonishing €614 million more than their Estimated Transfer Values (ETVs), a metric calculated using thousands of historical transfers and extensive in-game data points.

The scale of overspending

English top-flight clubs were not only the biggest spenders but also central to the most expensive transactions. Manchester City completed the summer’s highest-paid transfer, acquiring Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for £125 million (€145 million). City also secured Elliot Anderson for £116 million (€135 million), while Chelsea spent £117 million (€137.3 million) on Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. Real Madrid’s acquisition of Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig for £115.7 million (€125 million) also ranked among the summer’s priciest deals.

The FootballTransfers study pinpointed the most overpriced transfers by comparing the actual fee paid against a player’s ETV. The top five, revealing significant overspends, include:

• Yan Diomande: RB Leipzig to Real Madrid. Transfer fee: €125 million, ETV: €51.8 million, Overspend: €73.2 million. Diomande’s move was described as chaotic, with initial links to Liverpool and Paris Saint Germain before Real Madrid finalized the deal.

• Mateus Fernandes: West Ham to Tottenham Hotspur. Transfer fee: €99 million, ETV: €28.7 million, Overspend: €70.3 million. Tottenham secured Fernandes despite West Ham’s relegation, fending off interest from Manchester United.

• Elliot Anderson: Nottingham Forest to Manchester City. Transfer fee: €135 million, ETV: €69.4 million, Overspend: €65.6 million.

• Morgan Rogers: Aston Villa to Chelsea. Transfer fee: €137.3 million, ETV: €73.4 million, Overspend: €63.9 million.

• Enzo Fernandez: Chelsea to Manchester City. Transfer fee: €145 million, ETV: €83.3 million, Overspend: €61.7 million. Fernandez had initially joined Chelsea in 2023 for €121 million.

Context behind inflated fees

Several other transfers on the list also showcased clubs paying well above market value. Chelsea’s signing of Marco Palestra from Atalanta for €57 million, for instance, involved spending nearly five times his €12.4 million ETV, despite the player having just one year of Serie A experience. Similarly, Ayyoub Bouaddi’s €95 million move from Lille to Manchester City came after impressive displays during the 2026 World Cup, yet still represented an overspend of €51.5 million on his €43.5 million ETV.

Tottenham Hotspur was also involved in multiple high-value, high-overspend deals, including Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for €108 million (an overspend of €49.1 million) and Savio from Manchester City for €87.7 million (an overspend of €42.8 million). Savio’s transfer notably yielded Manchester City over €60 million profit, despite the winger scoring only two Premier League goals across two seasons for the club. Goncalo Ramos’ €74 million transfer from Paris Saint Germain to AC Milan also made the list, with his ETV of €31.8 million being low due to a lack of game time at PSG, despite a healthy scoring rate of 0.64 goals per 90 minutes in Ligue 1.

The 2026 summer window will be remembered not just for its record-breaking outlays, but also for the significant premiums clubs were willing to pay, often far exceeding players’ estimated market values.
