Christian Gonzalez agreed a four-year, $135 million extension with the New England Patriots on Monday, as first reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz and confirmed by multiple outlets.
The deal includes $102 million guaranteed and an average annual value of $33.75 million, both the highest figures ever paid at the cornerback position.
Gonzalez, 24, was the 17th overall pick in the 2023 draft. He was a second-team AP All-Pro in 2024 and a Pro Bowler in 2025.
Witherspoon’s record lasted three weeks
The extension surpasses Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon’s four-year, $132 million deal signed on 15 August, which carried $101 million guaranteed at an average of $33 million a year.

Gonzalez’s new-money average edges Witherspoon by $750,000 annually and his guaranteed figure adds another $1 million on top. It also clears the three-year, $90 million extension Derek Stingley Jr signed with the Houston Texans in 2025, which had briefly reset the market at $30 million a year before Witherspoon’s summer strike.
Kraft framed the negotiation in public
Talks stretched across the summer. Gonzalez skipped spring OTAs before reporting for mandatory minicamp and training camp, and owner Robert Kraft used a public statement in late July to signal that New England had already put a record offer on the table.
“We love Christian Gonzalez. We made an offer to him that makes him the highest paid player ever to play that position in the NFL,” Kraft told reporters on 25 July.
Gonzalez, asked days later, kept his side of the talks private.

“It’s just something we don’t want to handle in the media. I want to keep that with the team and my team,” he said on 28 July.
Director of player personnel Eliot Wolf publicly reaffirmed the club’s intent on 22 August.
“Christian is a tremendous player that we’ve been on record multiple times saying we want him here,” Wolf said.
Super Bowl LX rematch in Seattle
The Patriots open the 2026 regular season against the Seahawks at Lumen Field on Wednesday, 9 September at 5:20pm local time on NBC and Peacock, the first Wednesday season opener since 2012.
It is a rematch of Super Bowl LX, which Seattle won 29-13 at Levi’s Stadium in February to lift the franchise’s second Lombardi Trophy. Gonzalez posted seven passes defensed, one forced fumble and one interception across four postseason games last season on the Patriots’ run to that final.
New England’s next assignment after Seattle is the Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium on 14 September.
