Chicago’s 552 offensive yards and 10-of-14 conversion rate on third down produced a scoreline that no NFL Week 1 has ever matched. The 96 combined points beat the previous record of 88, set when Tampa Bay edged New Orleans 48-40 in 2018.

Williams was the engine. He completed 21 of 29 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns, added 10 carries for 65 yards and two more scores, and produced a 29-yard untouched rushing touchdown in the second half. He matched half of his 2025 rushing touchdown total in one afternoon.

Chicago pulls away after 31-31 tie

Carolina drew level at 31-31 midway through the third quarter. Chicago answered with three straight touchdowns and never let the Panthers back in.

D’Andre Swift carried 18 times for 124 yards and three rushing scores. Kyle Monangai added 100 yards on 10 attempts, including a 61-yard touchdown run.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson said he could feel the performance coming the night before kickoff.

“I could kind of tell (Saturday) night when we did our quarterback meeting one last time that he was just on top of it,” Johnson said.

Williams treated the result as a baseline, not a ceiling.

“That’s how we want to look each week. That’s who we want to be each week,” he said.

Kalshi’s MVP market repriced overnight

Josh Allen had gone into Week 1 as the clear favourite on Kalshi’s prediction market, trading at 11%. Williams sat much further down the board at seven cents.

Within hours of the final whistle in Charlotte, Williams was repriced to 13% on Kalshi, one point behind Allen at 14%. Lamar Jackson slipped back to 9%.

One Sunday does not settle an MVP race, but it did move Williams from an outside bet to a near co-favourite in the space of an afternoon.

Bryce Young throws for 361 yards in defeat

Bryce Young was not statistically the problem. He threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns on 23-of-37 passing, added a rushing score, and connected with Jalen Coker for 138 yards and two touchdowns on eight receptions. Young is now 0-4 in season openers.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales did not dispute what had happened on the other sideline.

“It was an incredible day by the Bears. There were some things that we did to give a really good offense more opportunities,” Canales said.

Chicago hosts the Minnesota Vikings in the Bears’ home opener at Soldier Field next Sunday, 20 September.
