Thibaut Courtois and Real Madrid have reached an agreement on a one-year contract extension, according to a report from Fabrizio Romano carried by Football España this week. The Belgian’s current deal expires at the end of the 2026-27 season, and the new terms would take him through to the summer of 2028.
Nothing has been announced by the club, and no financial detail has surfaced. What is on the table, according to the reporting, is a straight one-year add-on that fits Real Madrid’s habit of handing shorter renewals to players in their thirties.
Inter Milan performance moved the file
The contract talks were pushed to the top of the pile by what Courtois did on 9 September. Real Madrid beat Inter Milan 2-1 in their opening Champions League group-stage fixture of 2026-27, and the goalkeeper’s saves were central to the result.
Spanish radio station COPE first reported that Real Madrid planned to open formal talks in the days that followed, with French Football Weekly relaying that the goalkeeper is contracted until 30 June 2027 and would extend through 2028 if an agreement was reached. Courtois is 34, in his ninth season at the club, and joined from Chelsea in 2018.
No word yet from the club
The step from “talks planned” to “agreement reached” is a quick one in the reporting, but Real Madrid have made no formal statement, and neither has the player.
He has made 338 appearances across all competitions for the club since arriving in Madrid, according to reporting picked up by Yahoo Sports. The same reporting places the Courtois renewal among a wider round of contract work at the club that includes talks with Vinícius Júnior, Arda Güler and Jude Bellingham.
Both club and player want to close the file quickly, COPE reported via Yardbarker, with initial contacts between the two sides expected within hours of the first report. No date has been attached to a formal announcement.
