Manchester City’s teenage striker Floyd Samba announced his arrival on the senior stage with a stunning two-goal performance in his debut, helping his side to a dominant 5-0 victory over Norwich City in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday night.
The 17-year-old, son of former Premier League cult hero Christopher Samba, played the entire 90 minutes and was subsequently named man of the match. His goals, a header to break the deadlock and a finely curled second, were complemented by strikes from Rayan Cherki, Allan, and Ryan McAidoo, extending City manager Enzo Maresca’s winning run to six matches across all competitions, during which they have conceded just two goals.
A dream debut for the young striker
Samba’s impact was immediate, showcasing the predatory instincts he has honed throughout his youth career. Joining City’s academy at under-nine level, he has consistently impressed, notably scoring 24 goals and providing 10 assists in his first full season with the under-18s. He also netted a memorable free-kick to secure the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester United in May.
“I knew there would be an opportunity to get some minutes for the first time with the first team. To get a debut like that is mind-blowing. I couldn’t believe it myself – but that is just the beginning, I have got a big career ahead of me,” Floyd Samba told BBC Radio 5 Live after the match. He credited his senior teammates for their advice: “They have all been brilliant with me – before the game, giving me advice like ‘play your game, be you’ – those words have given me confidence and helped me score those two goals today.”

Maresca’s cautious optimism
Manager Enzo Maresca, who currently has Erling Haaland as his only senior striker option, expressed satisfaction with Samba’s performance, despite admitting the young forward isn’t a natural number nine. “I’m satisfied not just for the goals but for the performance too,” Maresca told BBC Sport. “I asked him in the last three, four days – when I decided to play him as nine – he said he never played there. He is not a nine for sure, but he was good. He is young, full of energy, strong, can finish, can set [players up]. He made some good decisions in the first half. I am happy but they are young and we have to go slowly, slowly. Hopefully we can give him more chances.”
The debut was made even more special by the presence of his father, Christopher Samba, who was seen celebrating passionately in the stands. Christopher Samba enjoyed a 26-year career as a defender, playing 171 top-flight matches for Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers, and 12 Championship matches for Aston Villa. While his father was known for his imposing presence at the back, Floyd has forged his path as a dedicated number nine. Floyd also has a younger brother, Tyrone, who is part of Manchester City’s youth setup.
