Remco Evenepoel has become the first male cyclist to win four consecutive elite individual time trial world titles after another dominant performance in Montréal.

The Belgian completed the 39.2-kilometre course in 44 minutes and 53.13 seconds, beating Italy’s Filippo Ganna by 57.31 seconds. Nineteen-year-old Frenchman Paul Seixas claimed bronze, finishing 1 minute and 13.04 seconds behind the champion.

Fastest at every checkpoint

As TV 2 reported, Evenepoel controlled the race from the opening kilometres. He recorded the quickest time at every intermediate checkpoint and continued extending his advantage as the course returned towards central Montréal.

The official Montréal 2026 course information lists a distance of 39.2 kilometres and 220 metres of elevation. The route incorporated Old Montréal, the banks of the St Lawrence River, Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve and Parc Jean-Drapeau before the finish near Parc Jeanne-Mance.

Evenepoel averaged more than 52 kilometres per hour despite the technical urban sections and the short rise towards the finish.

Four victories and a place in history

The victory continues a remarkable sequence that began in Stirling in 2023. Evenepoel successfully defended his title in Zürich in 2024, won again in Kigali in 2025 and has now completed the four-year run in Canada.

The confirmed results place him alongside Fabian Cancellara and Tony Martin as the joint record holder with four elite men’s time trial titles. Neither of those riders won all four consecutively.

Evenepoel’s next opportunity comes in the road race on September 27. Whatever happens there, Montréal has already given him one of the defining records of his career.
