The financial side of Harry Kane’s new deal is largely settled. What is not, according to Fabrizio Romano, is the small print of a clause designed to give Tottenham Hotspur a route back to the striker they sold to Bayern in 2023.
Romano set out the state of play in comments carried by Football365.
“For Harry Kane, the negotiations and talks between Harry Kane, his brother Charlie, and Bayern over new deal are proceeding very well,” he said.
“It’s about the length of the contract, how many years, how to sort that clause Harry Kane had in his contract for a Premier League return, for Tottenham matching rights.”

That last line is the news. The mechanism, as reported, would allow Spurs to match an offer if Bayern agree to sell Kane to another club, most obviously a Premier League buyer, if the striker ever decides he wants back in England.
What matching rights would actually mean
A matching rights clause is not a buy-back and it is not a first refusal. It does not force Bayern to sell to Tottenham, and it does not guarantee a north London return. It kicks in only after a bid from another club has been accepted, at which point Spurs can step in on the same financial terms. Kane, in that scenario, would still choose his destination.
Kane’s own read
The 33-year-old struck a similar tone himself last week. Speaking in an interview picked up by beIN Sports on 23 September, he said:
“We’re in good talks. We’re fairly close. There’s still some things that we need to iron out.”

“I think it won’t be too long before there’s some sort of announcement.”
Kane is out of contract at the end of the current Bundesliga season. Reports have pointed to an extension through to June 2029, with the striker keen to attach an option for a further year.
The view from Bayern’s boardroom
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has spoken publicly about the negotiations only in general terms. Back in July, he told bundesliga.com that “both parties are very keen” and that the club now needed to “make sure those expectations align and that we find common ground.”
No formal announcement has been made since. Romano’s characterisation is that the money is close to sorted; the length of the deal and the wording of the Tottenham clause are what remain on the table.

Kane joined Bayern from Tottenham in August 2023. His four-year contract with the club runs out next summer.
