Barcelona have been given the numbers. Erling Haaland’s camp has shared an estimated transfer fee and wage demand with the club’s leadership, according to TeamTalk.
This is quiet groundwork, not an offer. Joan Laporta’s intention is to time any serious approach for late 2027 or 2028, when the renovated Spotify Camp Nou is projected to reach full capacity and he wants a marquee signing unveiled to a sold-out stadium at that moment.
Aspirational, not active
Football España describes the project as aspirational rather than active, with no formal bid, agreed fee or confirmed talks with Manchester City. Lamine Yamal has reportedly been briefed on the ambition to build a blockbuster attack around him by that point. Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez is characterized in the same reporting as a more concrete, continuing target in Barcelona’s striker search.
Price depends on a verdict in Manchester
The timing cannot be separated from Manchester City’s regulatory position. In late September 2026, a Premier League independent commission found City guilty of 114 of 115 charges relating to financial breaches between 2009 and 2018. Sanctions ranging from fines and points deductions to title-stripping or relegation will be set in a separate hearing. The club says it will appeal.

The release-clause picture is contested. Haaland signed a contract extension in January 2025 that runs to 2034, and Sky Sports reported at the time that the deal carried no release clauses. Football365, citing Spanish outlet Sport, says the idea of a specific relegation-triggered exit does not hold up. Sources close to the two Spanish clubs nonetheless believe routes exist within the deal that could make the Norwegian available at a €175m valuation during the 2027-28 season, something City have not acknowledged.
The public line from Haaland’s camp
The private briefing to Barcelona is one half of the story. The public message is the other.
His representatives insist Manchester City are “currently the only club in their thoughts,” TeamTalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported on 28 September. The player remains contracted until summer 2034.
The commission’s sanctions hearing against the English champions has yet to be scheduled publicly.
