Wirtz was Germany’s best player at the Allianz Arena, and when the microphones found him afterwards, he turned the conversation to Klopp. The 23-year-old said the pair had already discussed, more than once, how he could rediscover the form that made him Europe’s most sought-after attacking midfielder at Bayer Leverkusen.

“Of course, he wants me to play the kind of football again that people are used to from me, and we definitely had one or two conversations,” Wirtz told reporters, according to Sportschau’s post-match coverage.

“He gave me a few things that I definitely will take with me and try to implement.”

Klopp returns to Wirtz’s defence

Klopp was appointed Germany head coach in July, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after the national team’s Round of 32 exit to Paraguay at the 2026 World Cup. Wirtz is one of the first Liverpool players he inherits as an international manager, and he has spent the past month pushing back against the criticism aimed at the forward.

In the Serbia build-up Klopp said the discussion around Wirtz’s early Liverpool form was overblown, describing him as “a once-in-a-century talent” whose quality was “so outstanding” that the noise around him did not matter.

After the Serbia win he came back to the same point, this time looking directly at Anfield.

“The way we want to play suits ‘Flo’ Wirtz. I think everyone in Liverpool is very happy today,” Klopp said at his post-match press conference.

A Liverpool start that has not clicked

Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in June 2025 in a club-record transfer reported at £116m, and his form on Merseyside has lagged behind the price tag. He went into the international break having yet to find consistent rhythm under new head coach Andoni Iraola, who replaced Arne Slot in June.

The Germany performance was his sharpest in months. Wirtz said the space Klopp’s side created for him made the difference and gave his verdict on what he needs at club level too.

“Ideally lots of space in every game so I can do what I want!”

He also credited the collective, in comments carried by Football Today.

“It was incredibly fun. Every single player gave their all on the pitch. We stuck to the game plan and did almost everything right. The players around me made it easy. We had a lot of movement in midfield. We were all really up for it.”
