Manchester City’s guilty verdict on 114 of 115 financial charges has turned every uncomfortable question about the champions’ squad into transfer talk, and the loudest of them concerns Erling Haaland.

Football Insider’s transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke reported that Arsenal are confident they can go pound for pound with Real Madrid and Barcelona should Haaland become available next summer. Sources at the Emirates told the outlet the club are not overwhelmed by the prospect of a bidding war against the two Spanish giants.

The claim is a report, not a confirmed move. Neither Arsenal nor Haaland have spoken publicly, and no bid has been lodged with Manchester City.

Guilty on 114 of 115 charges

An independent commission’s verdict in the long-running Premier League case against Manchester City was reported on 25 September, with the champions found guilty on 114 of the 115 charges originally brought in February 2023.

Punishment is being decided in a separate hearing. The club has said it will appeal, and the sanctions reported as possible in British media stretch from heavy points deductions to relegation.

Barcelona already in the room

Barcelona are not newcomers to the Haaland race. In an earlier Football Insider piece on 19 September, O’Rourke framed the Norwegian as a long-standing Catalan target and a potential heir to Robert Lewandowski.

“He’s been on Barca’s wish list for a long time,” O’Rourke wrote. “He’d be a dream signing for the Catalan club as well as they would look to bring in a new number nine to take over from Robert Lewandowski, but getting him out of Manchester City is going to be a totally different prospect due to his contract length, and obviously his price tag as well.”

Reporting on a Barcelona plan dubbed “Project Viking” has put internal planning around a £130m bid, according to Football365. The figure originates from the transfer account Indykaila rather than a Spanish broadsheet, and no formal offer has been made.

The 2034 contract

Any suitor still has to get past the deal Haaland signed in January 2025. Sky Sports reported at the time that the nine-and-a-half-year contract keeps him at Manchester City until the summer of 2034 on a reported £500,000 per week, and that previous release clauses were removed from the new agreement.

Whatever the FFP punishment turns out to be, City will be in a position to set the price for a 26-year-old striker who has 111 goals in 126 games for the club and has already scored five times in his first five Premier League matches of the 2026-27 season.
