Mourinhos problem, that he has to solve, before El Classico

Vinicius Jr will begin Real Madrid’s home match with Villarreal on the bench, and Jose Mourinho is treating the omission as a short, targeted reset rather than a demotion.

The plan, first reported by Defensa Central, is built around one specific fixture: the first El Clasico of the season at Camp Nou on 25 October. Mourinho wants Vinicius firing by then, and the staff view a weekend out of the starting XI as the fastest route back.

The numbers behind the call are stark. Vinicius has one La Liga goal all season, and in the 2-1 derby loss at Atlético Madrid he registered zero shots on target, zero chances created and zero key passes before being substituted around the hour mark.

The forward has himself pointed to confidence as the issue. Speaking after Brazil’s 4-2 friendly win over Australia in Brisbane on 30 September, Vinicius said his team-mates had let him take a penalty to lift him.

“My teammates know I need some confidence now. Losing a World Cup is hard and difficult to accept, and the comeback is never easy.”

Brazil were eliminated in the last 16 of the summer’s World Cup by Norway, and Vinicius has carried that disappointment into his club season. His trademark one-on-one running has lost its edge, his final-third involvement has thinned, and the goals have not come.

A reset, not a freeze-out

There is no internal alarm at the Bernabéu about the 26-year-old. Mourinho continues to view him as a central piece of his project, and the staff do not believe prolonged bench time would help him recover.

The Villarreal game is intended as a one-off. Unless training changes the picture, Vinicius is expected back in the starting XI for the Champions League trip to Roma, with Sevilla and RB Leipzig to follow before the journey to Catalonia.

The context strengthens the reset reading. Vinicius signed a new six-year contract in August that locks him in through 2032 and closed down Arsenal’s long summer pursuit. Mourinho, who publicly backed the forward in September, has repeatedly said the best version of Vinicius will arrive once the goals do.

A jagged start under Mourinho

Real Madrid go into the weekend fourth in La Liga. The Atlético derby followed an earlier 1-0 defeat at Real Betis, when Kylian Mbappé missed a late penalty and Troy Parrott scored his first goal for the home side. Mourinho, confirmed as head coach in June on a three-year deal to 2029, has had a more uneven reintroduction to the Bernabéu than most expected.

Villarreal travel to the capital in their first season under Iñigo Pérez, appointed over the summer on a contract through 2029 to replace the departed Marcelino.

Kick-off at the Santiago Bernabéu is on Saturday, 10 October at 9pm local time.
