Pair Erling Haaland with Harry Kane and you have the two most prolific pure strikers in the world sharing a frontline. That is the picture talkSPORT painted this week, reporting that two clubs are tipped to go after the Manchester City forward and that one of those scenarios would reunite him with the England captain.

The report stops short of naming either suitor as confirmed. But the Kane angle itself points firmly at Bayern Munich, where the 33-year-old has just committed to a new two-and-a-half-year contract after turning down the chance to join Barcelona.

City’s FFP verdict shifts the picture

The 26-year-old Norwegian was not supposed to be a transfer story this autumn. Haaland signed a long-term extension at the Etihad in 2025 that runs to 2034, and his contract contains no relegation release clause.

That calculus changed when an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of 114 of the 115 FFP charges brought against them by the Premier League. The club has appealed, but the possible sanctions range from a heavy fine to a points deduction, a transfer ban, being stripped of titles or, in the most severe scenarios, expulsion from the division.

Suitors have begun circling. Arsenal, Real Madrid and Barcelona have all been linked, and representatives of several clubs have reportedly made early contact with Haaland’s camp. His team, according to recent reporting, has publicly distanced itself from any specific talks.

Bayern want Kane now, Haaland later

The partnership idea is less fanciful than it sounds. Multiple reports in the past month have described Bayern Munich as positioning Haaland as a long-term successor to Kane, with the German champions keen to keep the Englishman in Bavaria for another two or three seasons before any changing of the guard.

Bild’s head of football, Christian Falk, has pushed back on the idea of an imminent move. Speaking to Yahoo Sports on 2 October, Falk said Bayern are not planning a short-term swoop.

“Bayern are looking at the situation, and they do admire Erling Haaland, as every club in Europe does, but they’re so happy with Harry Kane that there’s simply no space, on the one hand on the pitch, and on the other hand, on the wage bill.”

The wage bill point matters. Haaland’s package at City is at the top of the European market, and Bayern’s salary structure has historically topped out well below that level.

Barcelona pivot after missing out on Kane

The second club in the frame could just as plausibly be Barcelona. The Catalan side had sounded out Kane as a potential marquee signing, only for him to opt to stay in Munich. With that door closed, Barcelona’s attention is said to be turning to Haaland as an alternative, alongside Real Madrid, who have long been linked.

The 2027 window is the one most commonly cited by the clubs doing the groundwork, giving the FFP appeal time to run its course and offering a cleaner break if City are hit with sporting sanctions.

For now, no bid has been lodged and no club has publicly declared itself. City continue to insist Haaland is going nowhere, and his contract still runs until 2034.
