Two goals, one verdict: Garnacho pushes for first Villa start after intensive reset

Aston Villa’s internal view of Alejandro Garnacho has moved in the right direction. After a stop-start opening to his season-long loan from Chelsea, staff at Bodymoor Heath consider the 22-year-old to have made clear progress over the past fortnight, following an intensive block of work during the international break.

The context explains the urgency. Garnacho has made three Premier League substitute appearances for Villa, totalling 31 minutes before the break. He has yet to start a competitive fixture for Unai Emery.

Emery has repeatedly asked for time, pointing to problems Garnacho picked up in pre-season.

“Garnacho is a little bit behind, because of some circumstances we had in pre-season. It is time to be patient for the time he needs,” Emery said last month.

The two-week project

With no fixtures to prepare for, Emery and his staff ran what Villa effectively treated as a mini pre-season for the Argentine. There were several one-to-one meetings between manager and player, individual tactical sessions on Emery’s methods, a personal fitness plan, and two behind-closed-doors friendlies.

Garnacho scored in the first, a private match against Southampton, before Villa travelled to Spain for the Antonio Puerta Trophy.

Villa came from behind to beat Sevilla 3-1 on Friday, 2 October, with Garnacho striking in the second half after Isaac Romero had opened the scoring.

The player’s own verdict landed later on social media.

“2 test, 2 goals. Ready now!” he wrote on Instagram.

The clause written into the loan

The structure of the deal explains why Villa are investing so heavily in getting Garnacho back on the pitch. The season-long loan, confirmed on 23 July, carries a conditional obligation to buy, with a total package understood to meet Chelsea’s £42.6m valuation.

The obligation is appearance-based and has been described as “easily achievable”. Every minute Garnacho spends on the pitch takes Villa closer to triggering the permanent transfer and takes Chelsea closer to banking the fee. Manchester United, who sold Garnacho to Chelsea for £40m in 2025, hold a 10 per cent sell-on clause worth around £260,000 if the permanent move completes.

At his unveiling in July, Garnacho was candid about what he needed from the move.

“I think I was looking for a club that I could get confidence from and help me try to be the player that I was years ago,” he said.

Champions League minutes to come

Villa, who won the Europa League last season under Emery, entered the 2026-27 Champions League league phase in September. Emery, in charge at Villa Park since 2022, has rotation calls to make across three competitions.

The pecking order ahead of Garnacho has been explicit. Emery named George Hemmings, Alysson and Ibrahim Mbaye when asked last month about why Garnacho was not playing.

“George is playing fantastic. Alysson is also understanding things well and is giving us things I want. Mbaye also responded well,” Emery said.

Garnacho’s loan is tied to appearances. Every competitive minute Emery hands him takes Villa a step closer to triggering the permanent clause.
