The claim that reset the market this week came from Spanish journalist Francisco Gallardo, who writes for Defensa Central. He reported that Liverpool have made contact with Mbappé’s mother and agent, Fayza Lamari, about a possible move in 2027, with a fee of between €200m and €250m attached to the file.
A deal at the top of that range would push past the €222m Paris Saint-Germain paid for Neymar in August 2017, the current world transfer record.
Gallardo attributed the player’s thinking to a problem inside the squad.
“The player doesn’t feel loved or supported in the Real Madrid dressing room.”

Several English clubs are tracking the situation, but Liverpool are described as his priority.
€60m a year is his price to stay
Spanish reporting has put a specific figure on what would keep Mbappé at the Santiago Bernabéu: a net salary of €60m per year on a new deal. If Real Madrid will not match it, Mbappé’s stated fallback is to see out his existing contract, which runs to 2029.
That stance has already produced a response from the club. According to the current round of Spanish reporting, Real Madrid’s hierarchy, led by president Florentino Pérez, has told Mbappé he either signs an extension next summer or he will be put on the market, to avoid entering 2028 with just a year left on his deal.
The underlying math is familiar. A renewal preserves the asset, a sale in summer 2027 recovers at least most of a huge fee, and letting him walk for free in 2029 does neither.

He actually wants a free release
Mbappé’s preferred route, as the Spanish reporting describes it, is neither a renewal nor a sale. It is a free release from the club, allowing him to choose his next destination without a fee being paid. Real Madrid, who signed him on a free from Paris Saint-Germain in summer 2024, is not reported to be entertaining that idea.
He arrived on a five-year contract that runs until 30 June 2029, and he has scored 94 goals with 14 assists in 111 appearances in the Spanish capital, according to the figures circulated with the current reporting.
Iraola and Mourinho inherit the file
Neither club has confirmed anything on the record. Liverpool have issued no statement, and neither has Real Madrid or the player.
Both benches changed in the summer. Liverpool appointed Andoni Iraola as their new head coach in June, and Real Madrid brought Jose Mourinho back on a three-year contract later the same month.

The next formal checkpoint, if the Spanish reporting holds up, is the January transfer window, when Liverpool could first table something concrete. The decisive one is the summer, when the club says Mbappé has to either sign a new deal or be sold.
