Aston Villa’s £100m stadium project comes with unexpected Premier League problem

A building site now stands where the North Stand of Villa Park used to be, and the team playing in front of it has not won a Premier League match at home this season. Fenerbahçe arrive on Wednesday for a Champions League league-phase meeting with kick-off at 8pm local time, into a stadium whose two ends no longer mirror each other.

Kingscote Construction broke ground in June on a £100m rebuild that will replace a 6,537-seat stand with one holding 12,516, pushing total Villa Park capacity above 50,000 for Euro 2028. Until the new stand opens at the start of the 2027/28 season, matchday capacity sits at roughly 37,000, and about 7,000 regular supporters are not in their usual places.

The home results have followed the gap. Arsenal and Nottingham Forest have both won at Villa Park this season, and Brentford drew 2-2 to leave with another point. That is the full home return before Fenerbahçe.

The home record that used to be a given

Villa lost just 8 of 61 Premier League matches at Villa Park between November 2022 and January 2026, according to BBC Sport, winning 44 of them. Two home defeats and a dropped two points inside the opening weeks of 2026/27 are the exact inverse of that run.

Villa are 16th in the Premier League with one win and one draw from their opening six matches.

Emery holds the line

Emery has declined to tie the stand and the standings together.

“Our handicap is less supporters for the situation, but the club decided it,” he said.

“We must play better football, compete better, be more focused.”

Defender Matty Cash took the same position when asked about the changed atmosphere.

“It is obviously different,” Cash said.

“You can’t make excuses. You have to play what is in front of you.”

The one dissenting voice came from a visiting dugout. Brentford head coach Keith Andrews said he disliked playing at a ground with one stand missing, per BBC Sport, after his side’s 2-2 draw.
