Harry Kane does not want to be read as a pure finisher. With the 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony set for the London Palladium on Monday 26 October, the Bayern Munich striker told UEFA in an interview published on 13 October that his game at the Bundesliga champions has outgrown the “No9” job description that followed him out of Spurs, with a passing range he says he always carried but was rarely asked to use.

The finisher is still there. Since arriving from Tottenham in 2023, Kane has scored 152 goals in 155 appearances for Bayern across all competitions. He is 33.

What the goals column does not capture, Kane argued, is where he gets the ball and what he does with it before he finishes.

“I feel like I’ve always had the passing range and the vision… that’s just flourished these last couple of years.”

He put that down to the licence Bayern give him to leave the goal line.

“Right now, there’s a lot of freedom for me to get on the ball and make an impact, and also be the one to score the goals.”

A midfielder-striker before Spurs put him on the shoulder

Kane told UEFA his boyhood football had been built around a deeper role, and that the box specialist Tottenham produced was in part a creation of the position he was asked to play, with the England captain locked into a strict No9 once he broke through at Spurs.

An outside view backs the argument. In an interview with Sky Sports earlier this year, Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeness said the England captain had redrawn what a Bayern centre-forward looks like.

“When I look at Kane now, I see a number nine like I have never seen before. He defends, organises, assists, scores goals.”

Hoeness went further and placed the current Bayern striker alongside Gerd Müller as a reference point.

“Gerd lived in the box. Harry has shifted the number nine’s role beyond the box, without neglecting the essence of scoring goals.”

The trophy still missing

Kane has swept most of Germany clean and still not touched the one trophy that would reset the global reading of his career. He has won two Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokal with Bayern since 2023, lifting his first German Cup in 2026 after a 3-0 final win over Stuttgart in which he scored a hat-trick. The Champions League is the gap.

“The Champions League is always the ultimate goal, always the target for this club and for me.”

Kane has scored 54 goals in the competition over his career, more than many of its winners, without ever lifting it.

Ballon d’Or in London, contract waiting

The individual prize he cannot control is less than two weeks away. The 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony is set for Monday 26 October at the London Palladium, the first edition staged outside Paris.

Kane distanced himself from the race in comments to reporters last month.

“The Ballon d’Or isn’t in my hands. It depends on the people who vote. From my point of view, last season is already in the past. I’m now focused on this season and excited to see what more I can do.”

His club future looks closer to resolved. Kane and Bayern reached a preliminary agreement, announced on 5 October, to extend his deal through 2029. His existing contract would otherwise have expired in June 2027.

Kane himself kept it short.

“I’m happy here. I don’t think it will be long before there’s some kind of announcement.”
