Miami paid an eye-watering price in July to get Giannis Antetokounmpo away from the only franchise he had ever known. Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware and rookie Kasparas Jakučionis went north to Milwaukee, along with the No. 13 pick in the 2026 draft and first-rounders in 2031 and 2033. Wednesday night is when the receipt comes due.

The Heat open the 2026-27 season at Kaseya Center against the Minnesota Timberwolves, tipping off at 7:30pm local time on ESPN. It is Miami’s first opening-night meeting with Minnesota and the first time since 2019-20 the Heat have opened against a Western Conference opponent, a quirk made inevitable by the summer that reshaped the Eastern Conference.

Spoelstra: “This is what we all wanted”

Erik Spoelstra, now in his 19th season as Heat head coach and the longest-tenured coach in the league, has made no attempt to soften the stakes.

“We all know what we’re here for,” he told reporters this month. “Everybody understands what they’re signing up for. There’s not any confusion about the agenda.”

“This is what we all wanted.”

Antetokounmpo, 31, arrives after 13 seasons in Milwaukee as the only player in NBA history to have averaged at least 24 points, nine rebounds, five assists and one block per game across his career. His 2025-26 season produced career highs in effective field goal percentage (63.6%) and true shooting (65.8%), with 79% of his shots coming from the paint. The three-point number remains the obvious caveat: 28.5% for his career on 1,953 attempts.

Around him sits a roster rebuilt around shooting and defence. Klay Thompson and Tim Hardaway Jr. were brought in to space the floor around a frontcourt of Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, with Andrew Wiggins and Davion Mitchell projected to anchor the perimeter defence.

Thompson has already noted the demands of the room he has walked into.

“He cares. And it’s good to be around a head coach who doesn’t mind kind of getting into you,” the five-time All-Star said of Spoelstra. “He respects your work, but he also wants to get the most out of you. And he doesn’t believe in ‘you’re past your prime’ or ‘your best years are behind you.’”

A new-look Minnesota as a first measuring stick

The Timberwolves make a useful opening test. Minnesota reshaped its own roster this summer around Anthony Edwards. Minnesota has won 13 of the last 15 regular-season meetings between the sides, though the all-time series sits tied at 36-36.

Antetokounmpo’s preseason gave an early sketch of how Spoelstra plans to use him. Over three exhibition appearances he averaged 15.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists in 18.6 minutes per game, operating as a point-forward out of the elbows rather than a lob threat. The Heat’s 129-105 win over Toronto in Québec City drew a Magic Johnson comparison from Spoelstra after Antetokounmpo put up nine points, seven assists and four rebounds on perfect shooting in 14 first-half minutes.

The contract clock, and the LeBron comparison

The LeBron-in-Miami parallels are impossible to miss, and the comparison carries a financial edge. Antetokounmpo is in the final year of his current deal and becomes eligible to sign a four-year, $275 million extension with Miami six months after the trade became official, which would arrive early in the new year. Everything Miami did in the offseason was built around keeping him long past that date.

Antetokounmpo is expected to be available when the Heat tip off at 7:30pm local time on Wednesday at Kaseya Center.
