Vincent Kompany has given Bayern’s board a clear position: Kim Min-jae is not leaving in the middle of the season. Transfer reporter Pete O’Rourke, speaking to The Hard Tackle earlier this month, laid out Bayern’s thinking in plain terms.

“I think Kompany wants to keep hold of Kim Min-jae,” O’Rourke said.

“We’re getting the suggestions that Bayern could be willing to let him leave, but I don’t think that’s the plan right now. Bayern are going for honours in the Bundesliga and also the Champions League, they won’t want to weaken their squad.”

That is the wall Arsenal are now running into. Bild journalist Christian Falk, whose Bayern reporting drives most of the German transfer agenda, confirmed on 15 October that the 29-year-old defender is on the Gunners’ formal January 2027 shortlist.

“It is TRUE: Min-jae Kim is officially on Arsenal’s list. I’ve had this news confirmed,” Falk wrote in his CF Bayern Insider newsletter.

“They are looking for a potential defensive signing for the winter.”

The Hincapié trigger

Arsenal did not land on Kim by accident. Piero Hincapié picked up an ankle injury during a post-match warm-down after the 2-1 win over Leeds, carried off by team-mates after dropping in a small-sided game. Manager Mikel Arteta later told reporters it looked “more significant” than first feared.

Hincapié returned to differentiated training on 20 October, with Arteta pointing to a comeback in “a week or two”. Even so, the setback, layered on top of William Saliba’s longer absence, pushed centre-back cover to the top of the Gunners’ January board, and the £34m valuation attached to Kim has not scared Arsenal off.

Micheli’s Napoli hand

Arsenal’s confidence has a name attached to it. Chief scout Maurizio Micheli, now working under sporting director Andrea Berta, is the man who signed Kim for Napoli ahead of their 2022-23 Scudetto. His former Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti once called the defender “the best centre-back in the world”, a label Kim carried into Munich.

Micheli is understood to be driving the Arsenal move from inside the building, which explains why the Gunners, rather than any of the rival suitors, are being briefed in press reports as the strongest contender.

Four clubs, one quiet player

Arsenal are not alone. Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan and Juventus are also tracking Kim, who has started only a handful of matches this season behind Kompany’s preferred pairing of Jonathan Tah and Dayot Upamecano. His market value sits at around €18.6m, with a contract that still has more than 18 months to run.

The player himself has stayed out of it. Kim has not pushed to leave Bayern, and without pressure from his side the lever every suitor needs is missing. A move inside the January 2027 window would still have to clear both Kompany’s resistance and Bayern’s search for a stand-in. A summer 2027 switch looks the more realistic timeline, with Arsenal’s next concrete opportunity to open talks landing when the winter window opens on 1 January.
